Hi what's up I have the Vonage telephone service on my Comcast cable line. Everything works great for me thanks!
I have been downloading torrent files and I was interested in increasing my download speeds, using BitLord or BitComet.
I went to http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Linksys/RT31P2/BitComet.htm <----that website and it says to do a bunch of junk, and then to log into the router. The password it gives doesn't work though.
Before you get mad at me, just let me finish please 8-}
I saw a thread where someone asked for their password for the same router and was told no (he wanted to change something about a port 2 and was really pissy about the whole thing).
Anyways I didn't buy the modem I don't think (I have the regular $24/month service). I don't even necessarily need the password.
Is there a way I can either have the password or have someone open the port range for me?
Thanks and it's ok if the answer is no !

The area you are asking to get into (the port forwarding bits) is NOT a "Vonage secured" area, so stop worrying. There's no problem with your wanting to forward ports and do normal networking stuff. They just don't want you screwing about with secured passwords and the SIP userID and password your device uses to log into Vonage.
If it's the same as the WRTP54G/RTP300 series, the username would either be blank or "Admin" (maybe all lower case like "admin") and the password should also be "admin". Someone who owns one will probably chime in with a correction.
As soon as you log in, you will probably want to change that password. It won't prevent Vonage from getting into your router for maintenance, because they have their own passwords and backdoors in. But it will make the device just a tad harder to get into for everyone else. |

I've tried these already:
U/N:
P/W:admin
U/N:Admin
P/W:admin
U/N:admin
P/W:admin
U/N:(my email address)
P/W:(my password)
U/N:(my email without the @blah.blah)
P/W:(my password)
and none work for me. Do you know what else it could possibly be? |

According to the user guide, the default password for that unit is "admin"
http://www.vonage.com/media/pdf/RT31P2_UserGuide.pdf?refer_id=to0ce1l019nswtc-1c5y
I'd call Vonage and have them reset it for you, if that's not working and you don't know if you've changed it or what you've changed it to. |

i would do a factory reset on it if admin/admin isn't working.. hold down the little reset button on the back for about 30 seconds, and then give it a shot. do you have any other routers on your network you may be trying to access by mistake? |

Let me tell you about a very strange event...
I recently added some new Linksys gear to my office network.
I went from:
MODEM >>
WRT54GP2 (wireless router/vonage adapter)
To:
MODEM >>
BEFSR81 (router) >>
WRT54GP2 (wireless router/vonage adapter)
WAP54G (wireless access point)
Well, as the story goes; fresh out of the box, the new BEFSR81 router somehow picked up the login details of the WRT54GP2.
Please do not ask me how. |

Thanks for all the feedback guys.
Perhaps I am doing it wrong.
What I am doing is typing the Default Gateway IP address I get from cmd > ipconfig /all into my browser.
Then I get a pop-up asking for username/password. I enter in the password and it just flashes asking me again. After 3 tries I get a red screen of non-access.
My pc is plugged directly into this router, with the cable modem plugged into it and the wall.
Also on a more noobish note, on this portforward.com link it says to put in the static IP you want to forward to.
Do I have to make a static IP even though mine is already static?
Also
If yes, what number do I put in that box?
Thanks |

You can do what I do ...
Cablemodem <-> Linksys WRT54G router
Plugged into the router are:
A desktop and a switch for the rest of my network
Plugged into that switch are the rest of my computers, plus my Vonage box. I don't plug any computers into the Vonage box.
Because my Linksys router supports QoS, everything works quite well. As an added bonus, because I don't rely on the Vonage box to actually run my network, if I want to take it with me somewhere else, I can and the network still works. (This is useful if you have services on your network. I have my own email server, e.g.)
My experience is that VoIP routers aren't very good at routing, but they are good at VoIP, so I use them for that and get a router that's good at routing.
Eventually I will let a dedicated Linux machine be my router, but for now this is working very well. |
