so what you're saying is.... bypass the router by having the computer hooked up directly to the cable and have the Vonage hooked up directly to the cable too? like with a splitter? |

If your cable company will let you have two IP addresses, yes, you can use a hub or a switch (switch is better) to "split" the connection... but I was thinking of you using a router dedicated to routing, and using the Vonage box strictly as a phone box. |

Sorry I know this is stupid but, so you mean buy a router like from a store and then hook it up and then......hook up the Vonage router to it and only to the Vonage phone?
like...
[PC]>>>>>[NEW ROUTER] ...................../..................\ ..................../....................\ "[VONAGE ROUTER].......[CABLE (THE WALL)]
like that? |

It's not a stupid question ... ... but yes, that's exactly what I mean. |

Make sure it supports QoS so that it can give your Vonage traffic priority. The Linksys WRT54G is a wireless router that has wired ports, and it supports this functionality. |

is there a cheaper version that has wires? I don't care about wire/less at all so if there is, I'd rather get that.
Also can you help me set it up to be good on torrents when I get it?
=] thanks |

I don't use torrents, but it shouldn't be too hard to find people who can set it up.
The WRT54G only costs about $50 Canadian (about $35-40 US). I'm not aware of a cheaper router that includes QoS, although one might exist. |

The WRT54G's new hardware may cut its effectiveness with both QoS and especially BitTorrent. The linksysinfo.org forums are rife with people with the new "V5" hardware that are having problems. Some people report it works great, others really, REALLY, don't like it.
If you can find one, the WRT54GL, which is their slightly older Linux based router, has a long and reliable track record. I'm using one myself, and it is a fantastic router. Costs a bit more than the new WRT54G V5, though, and they are only available via mail order. |

QoS is turned off by default in the V5 WRT54G, which could be part of the problem. Turn it on. |
