PostPosted: Tue Jan 31, 2006 6:16 am    Post subject: New laptop to modem instd of VoIP routr, now no dial tone Reply with quote Back to top

I'm running my Vonage Linksys router through a DSL "Speedlink" modem to my Company provided broadband connection. It's been working, but only with a phone attached. I never tried connecting a computer until last night. Following my Company's instructions I attached the new laptop directly to the modem (modem has four ports, I chose the one next to where the Vonage cable was connected). Then I proceeded to configure my laptop proxy and port settings. I then logged into the internet using my ID and password (required), and was connected to the internet. However, when I checked my phone it was no longer working. I tried to disconnect the computer and go back to the original configuration, following the re-boot guidelines given by Vonage but no luck. Light for phone port on Vonage router just won't light. I think I may have done something to the modem or router by connecting my laptop to the modem instead of the router.

Hi, It's a router/modem with four eithernet ports. I had the Vonage connected first, then a few months later (two nights ago) I connected the laptop directly to the modem and that is when I ran the configuration CD for the modem. I had to input the proxy server number and port in the laptop and set the internet options and once is was connected to the internet directly through the modem I noticed the Vonage was no longer working.

This post belongs in the Voip category. Is this some sort of VPN possibly?

I think what you did was change the connection point from the modem now to your laptop. That is, in your first configuration, your modem logged you into your DSL account so that the internet connection was active and therefore when you connected your Vonage router to it, it was able to access the internet.

When you changed your configuration by adding the laptop and then using the installation CD that came with your modem, now your laptop is functioning as the connection point and so you need to enter your id and password from your laptop (though this is probably done automatically). So now all internet connections have to go through your laptop. This is not what you want since the Vonage router is connected directly to your modem not your laptop.

You want to keep the modem as your connection point so that both your laptop and your Vonage router can access the internet without having to "connect" to your dsl service.

In other words, I would "reinstall" the modem software using the CD and remove the laptop from the configuration all together and try it again. That is start from scratch and erase any previous configurations from the modem.

Once your Vonage router is functioning, then I would just plug in your laptop to the modem or to the Vonage router and don't use the installation CD at all. It should be able to access the internet. Personally, I would connect the laptop to the Vonage router so that it can handle the priority for voice traffice for you.

hope this helps.
