no matter what program i try my computer seems unable to torrent, even torrent downloaders in game clients like gunz do not work. i have set up port range forwarding for all possible ports they would use with no avail, i did not have this problem before i upgraded to windows XP pro, has anyone else had this problem or know a work-around?

BitSpirit - BANNED ON BOXTORRENTS! This client either does not understand how to correctly communicate with the tracker, or has many hacked versions floating around that attempt to cheat the tracker. Recommend BitComet .61 or µTorrent.

Just an FYI:

I had never heard of your Torrent client, but I have heard of BitComet, and from what I've heard you should probably also put that one on your "avoid" list. BitComet is (according to several posts I've read on more specific networking sites like linksysinfo.org) VERY hard on network gear.

The RTP300 is going to be "iffy" in terms of support for any sort of heavy BitTorrenting in the first place, due to the "5 day timeout" issue that plagues a lot of consumer grade routers. But BitComet is, from what I have read, probably going to be harder on it than most.

Azureus and uTorrent are the two that always seem to get glowing reviews. uTorrent is the more efficient of the two, as it is compiled code for Windows. Azureus has more detailed controls, and is cross-platform (written in Java). Personally, I have both running, transitioning my way over to uTorrent but finishing up some large seeds in Azureus for a few more weeks before shutting it down. Both are really good, solid, functional clients.

If you do a lot of BitTorrent, you are going to find that the QoS on the RTP300 may not be able to throttle your upstream bandwidth properly, and you'll get complaints of choppy audio on the other end. You can fix this to an extent by throtting your BitTorrent upstreams to leave enough space for 90kbps of upstream data.

In addition, you may experience the same problem on your RTP300 that I had on my WRTP54G (the "wireless enabled" twin of the RTP300) - the router would refuse to open any more connections after running BitTorrent heavily against it for more than a few hours to a day or so. You can fix this to an extent by reducing your simultaneous connections to something in the range of 50, and max outbound attempts to a very low number like 5 or less. You'll have to experiment with numbers until you find the right combination for you.

In my case, it got so bad that I just put a better router in front of the WRTP54G and relegated the Vonage router to "Vonage duty only" as just another network device on my network, with nothing but power, WAN uplink to my other router, and phones plugged in. Works GREAT now. Wink

^^^ all that is exactly true. I don't surf and do bittorrent at the same time, end up pausing Bitcomet till I load up a few tabs in FF. Not a huge problem for me as my WRTP54G has everything disabled but Voip functions. Seems like a PA and a real router seems to be the fix for many Voip problems. The Voip enabled devices are just taking too much of a beating; Cheaper quality parts? Newness of Voip? Too many failed firmware pushes? Who knows for sure.

Actually, in the case of the WRTP54G / RTP300, I think they are just trying to get too many things going on the processor and memory that are present. The box is trying to be a "jack of all trades" and ends up working very well for lighter/casual loads, but is a "master of none".

Let's face it, BitTorrent is HARD on your Internet connection. In my case, the WRTP54G has (or at least had, as of the 1.00.52 release) the "known Linksys bug" of keeping idle connections open for 5 days. BitTorrent was creating so many new connections and "forgetting" about them, and the router was keeping them open for so long, that the iptables on the router simply filled up! This is not an uncommon issue with "consumer" routers - even the native linksys firmware on their venerable WRT54G line has the issue.

I got a Linux based WRT54G V4 (now known as the "WRT54GL") and loaded up some aftermarket firmware that gave me access to the Linux kernel, and between the manual QoS upstream settings and the ability to adjust that idle connection timeout to something more reasonable (4 hours, in my case), I now have a router that is up, under full BitTorrent load, with working QoS, for months at a time. It has never failed once since I installed it.
