i'm on a cable modem and i'm connected via modem, rtp300, 2 pcs. i am wondering if there is a way to disable firewall & nat without my internet connection going out, basically i dont want the firewall as it causes many problems to an internet noob like me, i prefer my easy software firewalls, but when i disable firewall & nat my internet connection goes down. is there any way to use it simply as a router?

Why are you disabling NAT? You're gonna need that if you want to connect to the internet with the PCs behind the router. Check out this post for a good description of what NAT is all about.

the only way to disable the firewall is firewall & nat in one neat needlessly bundled little radio button. so if i want no firewall, no choice

There is no real need to disable firewall - just click on disable DHCP server - thats it.

Is RTP300 behind another router?

I doubt the RTP300 has an SPI firewall in place. You can reduce firewall function by going into "Security" and making sure all the filters are off, and going into "Access Restrictions" and disabling the two filters at the bottom there (Anonymous Requests and Multicast).

That's about as much of the "firewall" you can remove without losing NAT service, which obviously you need unless your ISP provides you with more than one public IP address (which would be very rare).

no other router, its used as a router as well as phone line. and i've tried turning off all the filters in security and disabling the two in the bottom of access restrictions with no success, and of course yes i restarted my computer just to be sure Smile, update, for some reason bit torrent works on my fiancee's computer but not on mine so i'm guessing its something to do with my computers settings...

OK, let's review a little.

What EXACTLY are you trying to accomplish?

The firewall itself should be transparent to what you are doing, so I don't see how it could be "causing you troubles", self-admitted noob or not. The directions posted should reduce the firewall's effectiveness, but I'm still unclear as to what you are trying to do that the firewall is preventing you from doing.

If you want direct access to the Internet (as in, all computers talking directly to the Internet with no port forwarding required), then that probably is not going to happen.

99% of the time, your ISP is only going to give you ONE IP address (one "access point" to the Internet). If you want to take that one IP address and have more than one computer or device on it, then you need "NAT", which stands for "Network Address Translation".

So, let's simplify things a bit. What are you trying to do on your computer that your router/firewall is not letting you do?

Aha. There it is. Wink

OK, BitTorrent requires a port to be forwarded (two of them, actually) to the computer that wants to do the Torrent. The default ports are 6881 and some other port hopefully in the high ranges.

If one of them is working, then you have either already set up the port manually, or you are using UPnP (Universal Plug'n'Play). If you are using UPnP, you are in luck - just change the port numbers on one of the computers so the two computers are each using separate ports, and it should work fine, other than the fact that you will be chewing up VAST numbers of connections and amounts of bandwidth, and your Vonage line and perhaps even the router itself won't work really well.

Not a problem. never heard of the client mentioned in that thread, and now I know why. (grin)

uTorrent and Azeureus both work VERY well.
