PostPosted: Mon Jan 30, 2006 7:31 pm    Post subject: Fax Number - Wont let me keep old one Reply with quote Back to top

I was told by the Vonage Sales Person that I could keep only my phone number if I got the Premium Business Account. I would need to get a new fax number. He said, however, that If I got the Premium Home Account for $ 24.99, I could Port over my Business Number and then get a regular Home account for $ 14.95 and keep my fax number. I was a happy camper.

He said that I would be receiving two routers. I asked if I had to pay for 2 routers and he once again said you have two lines, do you want 2 routers? I said only if they are free upfront and monthly. He said yes there are free.

I got an email that said they had the wrong information about my credit card and I had to reenter it on my account. That seemed strange as I went over it several times with the salesman.

Then I got an email from Vonage asking for my permission to cancel my phone service with Quest and switch to Vonage, there was no mention of my fax number.

When a box arrived with the router, there was only one. I called Vonage (woman from India or Pakistan) she said that I only needed one box for both phone numbers. I really couldn't understand her. I asked to talk to a manager. He too spoke with a strong Indian or Paskistani accent. He couldn't answer my questions either. He put me on hold for a while.

When he came back he explained that the way I was trying to set up my fax either would or wouldnt send faxes and either would or wouldnt receive faxes. I could not understand him. He was very polite, however. He said I could get a new fax number for $ 9.95 per month. He said Vonage doesnt allow people to keep their old fax number.

Now I have to keep my local phone provider and pay a high price for a fax line. For some reason I cant keep my old fax number with Vonage. I would really like to switch my fax number too. Anyone have a solution to this problem?

Everytime I read something like this I want to fly overseas and start slapping the yellow off these people's teeth. They should know that:

You can (and should) put 2 lines on each router. Putting one line per router is wasteful, it wastes space, shipping costs, electricity, time setting up, on and on. I don't know if sales reps get more money for shipping out more routers or what. But next time someone says you need 1 router for each number, get off the phone with them and get someone in the states to talk to.

If you want to bring in a fax line, you have to bring it into Vonage as a normal line. Then once that number's transfer is complete, an agent will remove it from your account. That ported number is off your account but stays in our pool. Then we add a dummy fax line of some other number, and swap that dummy fax line for the number you brought into Vonage.

You don't have to open a new account for every line! Blatant up-selling to get more lines sold. You should keep business and residential numbers separate, if only for billing/tax reasons, but setting up a separate account just for your fax line is asinine.

I took your advise and spoke to someone that speaks the "Kings English". If we made speaking the "Kings English" a requirement to do business in America, think of how many jobs we would still have.

I was told that it is a semantics issue. I was trying to transfer 2 phone numbers. I have a fax machine hooked up to the second line. I also use it for phone calls. If I call it a "dedicated fax line", then I cant keep the phohe number. If I call it a "second phone line", I can keep the number.

I dont know if this is a Vonage thing or a legaleze thing. Evidently, the words "dedicated fax line" must have somehow materialized onto the order and the second line was not transferred. The order was amended yesterday and because Vonage admitted the error, they waved the $ 29.95 set up fee.

Radical! Yeah I don't know what the deal is, for whatever reason, we can't port in a "fax line."

glad you got it straightened out! God save the Queen!

Even within Vonage there are different interpretations. First, 'You can't port a fax line to Vonage as a fax line'. Then, 'You can port the fax over, but it has to be to a regular plan line - which you can change later to a fax.' Then, you can't even do that..!'

I don't think you can port over an 800 or 888 number.

You cannot port a toll-free number to Vonage.
