Is there a way to fix the caller id for when I call people? When my number was being ported it showed my correct name when I called from the Vonage phone. It seems now that the transfer is completed and everything is working the caller id no longer displays my name. Insead it says "illinois Caller".

The most you can have them do is 'blank' it out. So instead it'll show 'Unknown caller' and your number.

I tired getting em to change mine to various nudie bar names around the area but no luck. I think mine says "Vonage Holdings" but im not really sure.

The way your name is displayed in caller ID at the terminating end of the call is the result of a complex and inter-company process. It is NOT the function of Voip, per se.

It is the responsibility of every phone company to file timely additions, deletions, or changes of its customer base to the appropriate RESPORG database, which in turn gets propagated and syncronized across the national network of SS7 provider LIDB databases, usually in less than 15 minutes. When the phone call is in progress, the terminating switch does a calling name lookup in their provider's LIDB database to retrieve the registered billing name and presents it to the CNAM-enabled phone line.

The cause of a call marked "Name Unknown", yet the number is presented usually happens when the originating party's company has not properly notified their RESPORG of the name to properly identify the customer in the LIDB database. Another cause is in the case of most of the telemarketing firms who are served by cheap (as opposed to ISDN-PRI) trunked tielines not directly associated with a physical phone number. These calls usually show up as "Name & Number Unkown". Due to a recent Federal mandate, phone companies were forced to 'stuff' in pseudo billing numbers to satisfy the law. This is why you have been seeing 800, 866, 877, and 888 area codes lately.
