Hi everyone - I have been a Vonage customer since '03 for and to-date have not had a single issue. However today i found that my original Cisco ATA 186 Phone adapter failed. I cannot get it to power up. I have been browsing through the posts and I see there are quite a few options. I would appreciate some recommendations based on your opinions. I have cablevision/optonline internet service. I have a belkin Pre-N wireless which works great. I see that my options are a PAP2, a RTP300 or else go for a VTECH/Uniden phone setup.

I would prefer to go for just an adapter ( pap2 or rtp300) however i also want to get the best option installed at this point.

Any comments/opinions appreciated as i would like to order tomorrow if possible - My wife is currently without a home phone and we all know what this is like Very Happy Very Happy , so therefore need to get it back online ASAP

thanks in advace Wink

Vinnie

I think you'd be well served by either the PAP2 or the RTP300. The RTP300 will give you 4 more ports, but on a different network (the devices will be able to see each other and the internet, but not any devices attached to your Belkin). Some people have stated they have success by using the RTP300 as a makeshift bridge by putting it on the same network as their main router and then doing a loopback from a LAN port to the RTP300's WAN port, but I've never been able to get that to work 100%. If you don't care about having additional ports, the PAP2 is probably the way to go. Or whichever is cheaper - and remember that you probably won't qualify for any of the rebates on either device since you already have Vonage service.

If you turn the local DHCP server off on the router, you have essentially turned it into an ethernet switch. The only problem is that you would not be able to access the router's setup page unless you enable WAN-side administration or set a static IP address in the LAN-side range of the router on the PC you want to access the administration page. Both are do-able, however.

The newest firmware for the RTP300/WRTP54G add a DHCP relay function, which (assuming it works as designed, I personally haven't tested it yet) will allow the computers attached to the LAN side to be assigned an IP address from the WAN side (either the router connected to the internet modem or the ISP).
