I just switched to Vonage three days ago. I am using:
Verizon DSL (no digital cable available)
(384 Up 1500 down low latency - tests great)
Linksys-Vonage WiFI Voip router WRTP54G
PC's connected via WiFi with WindowsXP firewall OFF

I even installed a UPS to cover the DLS modem, Linksys/Vonage Wifi Voip router and cordless telephone, so that this phone system could work for an hour or two during a power failure.

Click-2-call seems to have issues if your username / password is a sencable one with mixed case and numbers, and won't authenticate correctly. The Linksys/Vonage WIfi Voip router that all of our phone were exceptionly loud, even on mimimum volume. I could live with these issues.

I forwarded our existing line to the new Vonage number so that we could try Vonage before we took the giant leap of migrating our existing phone number.

I setup and tested voicemail, checked that my call forwarding from Verizon worked just fine, and waited for my wife to come home and really use Vonage the same way she has used our existing POTS line.

It all worked well enough to live with until call waiting cut in and dropped both calls.

Then after about 20 incoming calls people started to say. "I tried earlier and couln't get thru". Some got error messages others got ringing without voicemail. We estimate that we were "missing" 1 in 10 calls.

When we did get a voicemail is was extremely garbled even as a wav file.

Customer support wasn't much help, and doesn't really know how to deal with intermittant problems.

My wife operates her business from our home phone and cell phone. Realy reliable phone service is a requirement. Missed calls and messages translated to lost income, so we dropped Vonage.

I really wish that this worked well enough to switch, it could have saved us a lot on phone charges. Cry

you should have came here first and asked some quetions related to your problems, most have been adressed here many times.. and 3 days is not long enough to make a full decision, you could have un-forwarded yoru verizon line and continued to operate busines on that line untill you got your Vonage service working to your expectations.. comming here after the fact and telling us you "had" problems doesn't help you, cuz we can't help you now, since you have no Vonage to 'fix'..

Sorry you had issues but you should have posted them first here for help as opposed to now when there is nothing we can do to help you.

your issues could have been resolved had you given Vonage enough time to complete the transfer process if your number was portable. You could have visited this site too if you find the Tech. Support they provided was insufficient. Anyway, different strokes for different folks, that's how it goes...

I'm really tired of coming to this forum and finding posts like this. Your right, you could have saved alot of money. You really didn't give Vonage or this forum a chance. I wonder if you even did a search on any of your issues?

Three days is not enough for a Voip service trial. You need a little more patience to make this work for you. I went through thick and thin with Vonage on and off for three months. Then boom, it begins to work like a charm. My E911 even worked like magic this morning (by accident).

I wish I could say Voip is just a plug and play thing. But it is not. I believe someday it will get there though. I also believe someday there will be more Voip users than regular phone users - just like touch tone replaced rotary, CD replaced tape, DVD replaced VHS and didgital camera replaced film camera. We are all sort of early adopters in this Voip revolution.

Think about it, there could be other interupting factors down the road - electric goes out, cable modem goes out. Just got to prepare for all those.

I think it probably is for many Vonage customers. When I received my first RT31P2, it was just a matter of plugging the router into my existing router, plugging it into power, and 5 minutes later I'm making phone calls. Similar with my RTP300 as well. Plugged it in and it started working. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Probably 90% of the problems people have with Vonage are actually due to their ISP, NOT Vonage. FWIW, I'm using Verizon DSL here, never had an issue with the internet connection causing problems for my Voip. The only trouble I've had with Verizon is that they do maintenance between 12am-6am and it sometimes will prevent me from connecting outside of Verizon's network. It resolves itself automatically, but it's a pain when you run backups over IP at night.

Voip is definitely the way of the future. I see many large organizations switching over to it and even the phone cos are going to it. If you order Verizon's FIOS (fiber optic internet), they automatically convert your phone line over to Voip without telling you. They also do you the "favor" of removing the old copper wires from your house to the street so that no other provider can give you phone/internet service over the phone lines. Nice of them, isn't it?
