PostPosted: Sat Jan 28, 2006 2:32 pm    Post subject: COMCAST locking-down Vonage-LinkSys MAC addys? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi, I've been using Vonage in DFW Texas since May (WRT54GP device via Cable/COMCAST) and I had 6 months of good service until recently when Comcast started having outages in my area.

I know that Comcast fixed some valid issues with their upstream/downstream power issues (as well as EMI in my area) so I know they've been very honest with me on that front; however, I noticed something odd recently that makes it appear that Comcast is corraling Vonage users into a special branch of their network??

Here's what I see:
When I use a regular NON-Vonage router (with a differing MAC address) my cable modem gives pulls down a 67.187.x.x IP address. If I use my Vonage router I get a 24.1.x.x address EVERY TIME!

This is completely reproduceable, and very odd. I did a Visual Route test to see where these two different IP networks are, and the 67.x.x.x ip goes to a "TEXAS-16" network in Cherry Hill, NJ and the 24.x.x.x goes to Mt Laurel, NJ "TEXAS-8" network (I'm in TX but I guess NJ is where my Comcast has its peer-point from here? Weird.)

When I do Speakeasy.net tests with the non-Vonage router I get GREAT speeds, and when I do speakeasy.net tests using my Vonage router I get around 3000kbps down, while on the Vonage router (with my phone NOT in use) I see about 1700-1800kbps and i get a lot of packet drops.

My non-Vonage Router is a LinkSys RV042, my Vonage router is a Linksys WRT54GP.

Anyone have any thoughts or is anyone else experiencing this with Comcast or any other ISP? Is this just QOS or is it something else??

I'm may have to drop Comcast due to the downtime and performance issues, or maybe drop Vonage to make my COMCAST problems would go away entirely??

Help!

Sorry for the grammar problems, I wrote this quick mostly from memory, but to avoid confusion my NON-Vonage rotuer gets the near 3000kbps downstream speeds, while the Vonage router is getting the 1700-1800kbps. I messed up in typing in wanting to get this out here.

Thanks for any help!!!

The 67.x vs 27.x IP DHCP behavior also happens on my NON-Vonage router IF I do a MAC CLONE and give it my Vonage router's MAC addy.

So my DHCP'ed IP from the Cable is completely happening based on my MAC address. This is crazy!

I'm on Comcast in the Dallas area also, and have had a 67.177.x.x address for several months now (and the SAME address too, despite firmware upgrades, reboots, etc etc.) I'm running a non-Vonage router ahead of two Vonage boxes, one for home and one for home-office.

I think all you're seeing is, when a new MAC address shows up, a new IP is assigned, probably somewhat at random. But after you've been logged on, the system will tend to remember your MAC and IP and reissue you the same one over and over, which is generally good for stability. When your router A first showed up, it was assigned a particular address, and when router B showed up, it was assigned a different one, and now those IP addresses will be persistent for quite a while, based on MAC address. I really don't think its anything nefarious on Comcast's behalf.

And as for the difference in performance, you MAY be seeing that based on the fact that the Vonage combo boxes are generally lousy performers as routers. I can't say that's your situation for sure, but its quite possible that that's the issue, there have been MANY threads here about troubles with the router portion of the Vonage boxes. One reason I use a *real* router ahead of mine and turn off all the routing functionality in the Vonage units.

Hey Guys,
I am having the same issue, for about 6 weeks now. However I was not smart enough to pick up on it. I am in Atlanta GA, i was pulling an ip of 68.x.x.x until about 6-8 weeks ago, comcast pushed me to a 24.x.x.x ip address. I to get speedtests sucked in righ around 1mb sometimes even lower. my phone quality has totally gone down. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the fact that just 2-3 weeks ago comcast launched their own Voip server for 40$ a month here. I wonder if they are trying to perserve bandwidth for their users???? stick us on the end of the network with minimal bandwidth. I dont know what to do, Vonage saves me alot of money, but its not worth this performance issue.

Any one that is still on the 67 range IP of comcast, have they launched their Voip in your area yet? How about those of you n the 24 range...did they launch it for you? Maybe that has something to do with it.

Yes...Comcast's $40 Voip has launched here. This thread seems a bit "Oliver Stone-esque" to me, but I guess you never know...

On the 68 network here, and Comcast Dig Voice has been deployed here. No degradation, no issues, great speeds. I think this is mostly isolated to a few areas and can be attributed to regional routing issues. I doubt there is a huge conspiracy going on.

I was on a 68. address and 70. address with Comcast whenI was on the road last weekend with no issues. Always had at least one router between me & Comcast at these locations 'though.
