I just installed my RTP300. I do not have any phone connected yet (waiting for transfer of service) but the light for phone line 1 on the RTP300 is on (steady). According to the manual that indicates that there is "an active or registered connection". Do I have a problem? |

When you sign up for Vonage and even before you get your ATA you receive a temporary number to use while your POTS number is being ported. I believe, if I remember correctly, that this is explained in the inserts you received with the RTP300 but it may be a bit unclear.
Being as you connected the RTP300 correctly and phone light is lit up you have service. You can make calls and receive them but only on the temporary number until your POTS line is ported. This is a good time to test out everything, make and receive calls, learn features etc.
When your number gets ported the temporary # will be discontinued. |

Thanks Bob, I missed that. I found the original "Welcome" email and it had a temporary number as you said but I am still confused (not unusual for me). The installation guide says to plug the phone into Phone Port #1 (it also says that Phone Port #2 is used only if I have a second line). When I plug my phone into Port #1 I hear a message that I am plugged into the wrong port. If I plug into Port #2 it works? Is the temporary number automatically assigned to port #2?
Also, when I try to call out on my Vonage line I get a "Please Enter your password" message? I don't have any password associated with Vonage as far as I know other than the one for logging in my vonage web account and that is alpha-numeric. Did I miss something else? |

I ended up calling customer care about my dial-out problem and they told me that the lights on the front of the RTP300 are reversed with regard to the actual phone ports! Can you believe it?
The password issue was my own stupidity. I was trying to call my current regular number (the one I am trying to get ported) and in the Vonage world they knew it was me and it was assuming I wanted to get to my voicemail - they wanted that PIN. |

I got a RTP300 as a replacement for the RT312P in September. The phone lines on it were also reversed. So i guess they have little misslabling problem.

Hmmm! If they knew about this 4 months ago why are they still shipping mis-labeled units? |

Are you sure that they are actually reversed, or are you confused the way I was at one point? On my RTP300, the lights are on the front. The light for phone 1 is on the left and for phone 2 is on the right, as you would expect (reading left to right). By the same token, the actual ports are on the back. Looking at the back of the unit, port 1 is on the left and 2 is on the right, again as you would expect.
However, looking down on the top of the unit, this puts phone port 1 immediately behind light 2, and phone port 2 immediately behind light 1. Is this mis-labelling? It's all a matter of perception.
Getting back to a more important issue for WayneW, you should be aware that during the porting process, calls to your old number will continue to ring your old phone if the calls come from non-Vonage customers. However, calls from other Vonage customers to your old number will ring your Vonage phone. This is normal with Vonage porting, but it means that you should keep a phone plugged in to the Vonage adapter to receive calls from other Vonage customers.
After the porting is complete, all calls to your ported number will ring the Vonage phone. The temporary number will disappear automatically. |

I just looked at the very fine print below the lights. The phone light which is on is to the right of the one that is off. The label of the lite one says "phone 2". This is the way it came from the factory, and I have not asked for it to be switched. So I concluded that it was mislabeled but the other possiblilty is that the factory default was backwards.
Anyway the RTP300 has been a wondful adapter -- far superior to the RT312P.
