I have found out that is seems to be impossible to port a FX number to Vonage. No reason is given other than "we can not do that at this time". My attempt ended up failing.

When I called Verizon again they told me that they removed the FX feature from my "account" by giving me a new number. My old number was disconnected (causing Vonage to reject the transfer request). Verizon also told me that it did not matter if the number was disconnected or not because the old number was still marked as a FX number even though it was no connected anymore. They told me that there was no way possible to get that number to Vonage. Sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

To top all of this off, I received my Verizon bill in the mail yesterday. My bill is normally $39 a month. This one was $87! Why? First reason was that then they assigned me a new number my billing cycle changed. So I was paying for 1.7 months of service this time. The other reason was that Verizon charged my $38.50 to remove the FX. Verizon never told me that this request would result in ANY charge to my account. I called them yesterday to object to this charge. After being passed around to three different departments I finally got someone who agreed that I should not have been charged. They gave me a credit for the $38.50 and also an extra credit to apologize for the trouble. The total credit was around $64. Just another reason that I am trying to escape Verizon. They have a history of shady charges on phone bills.

Other than all of this hassle I am very happy with Vonage.

I also tried to transfer an FX number to Vonage from Verizon.

I experienced the same frustrating failure. I cannot stand Verizon at this point for blocking what should be a very simple number transfer. I am forced to give up the number now and get a new one - since it was costing me $80 per month for the same thing that Vonage can do for $20 per month.

Verizon told me that Vonage "can not handle a FX number". BS. I told them Vonage just needs the number. They don't need to worry about whether my Internet connection is in the local calling area of the number. Clearly this is an attempt to keep me as a customer rather than some technical issue.

I am moving my 2 business and 2 home lines from Verizon to Vonage and cancelling my Verizon DSL and a Verizon Wireless account to move to Sprint PCS. This attempt to hold me hostage as a customer will cost them about $3600/yr in lost business. It may not matter much to them, but I'll feel better and save a lot of money.

I am having the same issue!!!

Verizon will not let the FX number go, so Vonage can not transfer the number. The FX excuse is BS and I am going to get to the bottom of this.

Vonage says they can only transfer normal numbers, with no features. So I asked Verizon if I moved my house into the are code region where the number is from, could they transfer my number. They said yes. Then I asked Verizon, "Now would it be a normal number?" they said YES. So I then asked, "could I now tranfer the number?" They said, "Yes, because there is no FX now..." .

I find it very interesting that the steps here could be completed. But Verizon wont do it for Vonage...

What can I do???

I feel your frustration with the process. I was able to port over my number. This is what I found out. After processing the authorization as required by Vonage, I received an email from Vonage stating ,in part,

"In processing your number transfer request, we have been advised by
your current phone carrier that there are issue(s) with your number
that are preventing the transfer to Vonage. In order to transfer your
number to Vonage, all issues need to be addressed so that we may
process your request:"

The issue was the FX feature. I called verizon and told them that I wanted the FX(foreign exchange) feature removed. One person said that it can't be done. I made a complaint to the FCC and the MD public service commission. I received a call from verizon that said that they never received a request from vonage!!! I called Vonage and found out that they lied in the email. the request to verizon neve occurred. Vonage uses a third party company to do the transfers. This unknown company seeing the FX feature rejected the request without sending to verizon. When I called verizon I was told that they would not remove the FX feature if I , as an individual made the request, It would have to be by a carrier such as Vonage. So here I am. I a situation where Vonage won't request the transfer and verizon won't make the change just because they won't deal with plain customers. I contacted Vonage and made them make the request. I told them that you are sending millions of dollars for new members and the best referrals is through happy customers. I finally got my number ported.

I am going through the same issue. I opened a ticket and kept asking for a status update via email to Vonage saying Verizon has no request for a number transfer. Finally I received an email:

"We've had some luck with porting foreign exchange numbers,
but there is no guarantee your local provider will release the number, but we'll give it a try."

I checked my Verizon account online, an order for disconnect is scheduled for 3/8. I have to see what happens.

Have you noticed any difference in voice quality on your phone before and after the number transfer?

Knock wood the transfer went very smoothly, I have had Vonage for eight days and I cannot detect any decrease in quality. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I am glad to hear that you were able to get your number ported. I thought about going the FCC and PSC complaint route to try to get some response but I just wanted it to be over (and have my Verizon line disconnected) so I gave in and cancelled my LNP request. I did end up transfering the "new" non-FX number that Verizon gave me.

I would have liked to keep my number but I am ok with it and very happy to be maying less than half for my phone bill.

It was a little bit of a hassle updating my phone number everywhere (credit cards, bank, etc) but it was not too bad. As a side benefit I get less telephone solicitor calls with the new number (for now anyway)... even though I was on the Do Not Call list my phone used to ring all the time. I guess we will have to see how long that lasts.

From reading all the postings, I put in a complaint to both the FCC and PUC of maryland. The PUC responded quickly to the complaint and I am working with them to resolve.

One problem I did have so far is that Verizon could not find the PON ( When making a change like this, they assign a Purchase Order Number to the ticket ). So the PUC is having me work with Vonage to get the PON that was assigned.

I am thinking that Vonage doesnt have a PON because that third party company rejected it because of the FX. We will see!!!

Transfer with FX is done!

It took 17 business days just to get a LOA and 25 business days to port the number. I think the third party that Vonage uses initially refuses any FX numbers. I persisted with constant email and finally looks like they relented. Verizon always told me that they were not holding up anything. Verizon did not even have a request for transfer.

Be patient, it can be done!

I have been calling Vonage for the last 2 days trying to get that PON for the PUC. so u said u didn't need to go this route and u kept sending emails to vonage????

can I get that email from u?
please....
because I have been calling and calling with Vonage just hanging up on me and not returning calls....
