What is the proper setup using these devices. I tried to put the Motorola behind the netgear with the network cable plugged into the WAN port and the Motorola would not obtain a ip address. Yes DHCP is enabled on the router. Do you have to assign it a static IP?. Do you use port forwarding or port triggering with this router.
dsl modem/netgear wgt624/cpu's,Motorola
I can get the motorola/vonage to work if I put it in front of the router but the Motorola seems to interrupt my internet connection at times.
Thanks in advanced |

The Motorola's DHCP client doesn't seem to get along with the WGT624's DHCP server. I ended up going to the MTA's config web page and assigning it static information. I also used Port Forwarding on the WGT624 to forward the magic UDP ports to the MTA's static IP. I'm not using the DMZ feature of the Netgear; I'm not sure it it would help or not.
With this setup I have my MTA working, but it does drop calls after about 10 minutes. However, I don't think it's related to my Netgear setup. After some ping-plotting it looks like my cablemodem and/or the actual cable line run into my house may be at fault. Time Warner is coming out on Friday to run a new cable line. Hopefully things will get better then.
I am using the latest firmware on the WGT624 (v4.0.4).
Good luck! |

I assign the mta a static ip and foward the ports specified in the setup guide but under atached devices in the netgear config I don't see the mta attached. I get stuck with the mta trying to contact the Vonage servers. The four blink mode. How do you specify in the netgear config that the motorola's static ip address? |

You don't actually have to tell the Netgear about the MTA's static IP (well, except in the Port Forwarding config). However, just for my own tracking purposes I did go into the Netgear's "LAN IP Setup" config screen and added the MTA's MAC address and static IP to the "Address Reservation" list.
The Netgear's "Attached Devices" screen never seems to completely reflect reality. I don't tend to put much faith in what that screen shows.
After setting up the four Port Forwarding UDP items in the Netgear, I power cycled the MTA and it went through it's boot up cycle and got a steady light.
You should verify in the MTA's config screens that it has a static IP address and that you've listed the Netgear's address (probably 192.168.0.1) as the gateway and the DNS server. Oh, and the subnet mask should probably be 255.255.255.0. |
