PostPosted: Wed Jan 25, 2006 4:50 am    Post subject: Can't SimulRing 2 Vonage lines? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi gang,

I'm sure somebody here can shed some light on this for me, because the two different Level 2 Technicians at Vonage didn't seem to know anything about SimulRing! Sometimes I truly wonder if they even train those guys over there. :-\

Anyways, I have 2 separate Vonage lines. (Two separate routers at 2 separate locations.)

I have set each Vonage line to simulring the OTHER Vonage line. Only one of the two Vonage lines has its voicemail enabled.

However, as soon as I set simulring on each line to ring the other Vonage line, I'm sure you veterans out there can guess what happened: All incoming calls went DIRECTLY to voicemail, instead of ringing.

Is there any way to have 2 Vonage lines simulring each other, and then have just ONE of them answer voicemail after 30 seconds? I'm assuming not (based on my failed trials today), but I'd love to hear anything you guys would have to say about this issue.

Thanks,
Scott

I can certainly test it for you tomorrow (or much later today as I look at the time).

Just wondering? What happened to you between tonight and this day?

Why I'm leaving Vonage: Blank voicemails + no cust service

I will be canceling my service with them within the next few days, and I will never use Vonage again.

Thanks for asking, Dan!!

I was posting messages on that thread right up to the end, and I appreciate everyone's assistance! I should probably have posted a follow-up over there. I will post my follow-up over there right now, in fact.

The follow-up to that thread is this: Vonage gave me 1 free month to "give them another chance", so that's what I'm doing right now. I actually have only received ONE blank voicemail since giving them another chance, so it seems like the situation is improving somewhat.

See ya,
Scott

Great!

I tell everyone I know that Vonage Customer Service really does "aim to please".

I am glad to hear that this is true for you also.

Smile

I don't know if I would go that far. I would never agree that they aim to please... I would agree that they try to recover people who are about to cancel, because it's cheaper to keep existing customers than get a new customer.

I just got a 2nd blank voicemail this morning (Vonage likes to call these "dead air voicemails"... they happen so often that they have a term for it), and I have no idea who it's from.

Giving one free month of service is a small consolation for me missing business calls & giving my business a bad reputation. I can't return these calls because I have no idea who they're from... the caller ID was anonymous on these calls.

Instead of spending hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising, perhaps Vonage should be spending that money on the technical side of things.

I stand by my earlier posting that I think Vonage's customer service is poor.

The way you have Simulring set up has created a loop. (TN is telephone number)

TN1 --simulring--> TN2 --simulring--> TN1

or

TN2 --simulring--> TN1 --simulring--> TN2

So essentially, you've created a situation where one number ends up calling itself, therefore sending the call to voicemail.

To achieve what you want, you will need to have both TNs on one account. Then, you can do one of two things: create a call hunt list (but the calls will only go to the next phone if the first is already in use) or a ring list with a virtual number (or toll-free number). The virtual number will allow you to set both phones to ring simultaneously (Blast-Me ring type), sequentially, or randomly.

Thanks for your enlightment on what is causing my problem.

Can you please explain more about your 2nd idea -- the ring list with a virtual number? I'm not sure how to set this up.

I already have both telephone lines on the same account, PLUS I have one virtual number that is linked to one of those main lines... so it looks like I'm in the position to do what you suggest, but I'm not sure how to set it up.

Thanks again! Smile

If that virtual number is the one auto-assigned for a LNP number transfer, you will need another one (the LNP virtual number can not be set up in this manner).

First, you will need a virutal number. Then, to set up Ring Lists:

1. Launch your Internet browser and log in to your online Web Account.
2. Select the "Features" tab from your Dashboard.
3. Select the Virtual Number link or Toll-Free Number link.
4. Click the View button next to the number you want to configure.
5. Add the lines to you Ring List using the left and right arrows.
6. Use up and down arrows to modify the order of your ring list.
7. Select one of the Ring Properties.
8. Select Voicemail Options (which voicemail box the calls go to).
9. Click the Save button.

Oh, I see! I didn't know that was there! Very cool.

But in order for this solution to work the way I really want it to work, all my incoming calls would have to be made to my virtual number. I have people mostly calling my REAL lines (my virtual number is rarely called), so this solution ultimately won't work for what I need.

But thank you for the heads-up on this extra feature in the dahsboard!

I found that those "blank" voicemails can be read. Apparently one of MS's upgrades crippled media player somewhat. My Vonage Dashboard also became unreadable-- I switched to Netscape and everything seems to work again. I save the voicemail file to desktop and use sound recorder to open it.

I also use VMRover to access my voicemail.. Even the free version will play the first 20 seconds or so of your messages.

Since my Softphone keeps a record of missed calls, I just turned off Voicemail.
