Nate runs a v2 and it also works flawlessly with never a glitch, as Nate has already related in this thread. So just what makes you say that the version 4 is "better than the older versions" by enough to recommend NOT getting an earlier one? Its pretty tough to get better than "works perfect." <shrug>

Well, frankly, I'd upgrade to a V3 or a V4 if I could justify the cost, just to get off DOCSIS 1.0. I'm sure my ancient DOCSIS revision is holding back my numbers a bit. But new modem's ain't cheap, and the BEFCMU10 v2 is MORE than adequate to maintain my 256/3000 connection and Feed The Vonage Beast.
DOCSIS 1.1 or 2.0 might cut my latency numbers a bit, and my ISP is after me from time to time to upgrade, but they only support a bizarre brand of cable modem for which they want $50, they can't offer me firmware upgrades on anything but their own brand of gear (so buying a new Motorola or Linksys would be useless unless I was guaranteed it came with the latest firmware), and they are about to be bought out by Comcast who might switch out everything.
So, I'm stuck on DOCSIS 1.0 with this beast, though my modem technically supports DOCSIS 1.1 at least - I just can't get firmware.
But, for the price I paid (free after rebates) over three years ago, saving $8 a month on rental, and the fact that it does everything I need, if not everything I want - I'm happy.
A v2 or v3 for $5-10 makes one sweet backup unit if nothing else. They are reliable as heck. |

When Comcast takes over, you should be able to use the Mot Surfboard series. They have such a cool interface. |

My current company also recommends the Surfboards. But they don't offer firmware upgrades to them, and it'd be just my luck that I get one that has DOCSIS 1.0 and needs a firmware upgrade for 2.0 and Comcast decides to keep the Axxis gear that SusCom is running.
Gotta wait and see what happens. I'd hate to blow $50-75 in the hopes of an incremental improvement (which is bad enough), only to find out it makes no difference at all! |

Good point. The only thing you can really do is wait. Hopefully Comcast recognizes that new modems in new svc areas are a good way to keep their network nice and fast. |

My 2 cents after thousands of service calls, my Favorite 3 cable modems
Motorola Surfboard 5000 series Toshiba PCX 2600 series All Linksys CM's (excellent, but no ISP is going to give them out)
least favorite cable modems: terayons Scientific Atlantas those no-name nondescript Ambit EoU606U or whatever that number is - utter garbage |
