PostPosted: Tue Jan 24, 2006 12:17 am    Post subject: Problems Faxing With an HP 7210 Reply with quote Back to top

All right folks... here goes.

I pride myself on performing as much trouble shooting on my own before I ask for help, but I am completely stumped on this one. I hope I am just missing something very easy to fix my problem, but here goes:

Got my new HP 7210 OfficeJet a few days ago and was excited to get rolling. The main purpose for the purchase was to fax signed documents occasionally and make a few copies here and there.

Set up was a breeze and everything worked great until I tried to send that first fax... and nothing. Sad

So, I began my troubleshooting by completing the following steps (not necessarily in this order):

- Skimmed the manual (painful... I hate manuals) and it was worthless

- Hooked a telephone up to the phone jack for the fax and it worked fine

- Plugged the telephone into the EXT jack on the back of the 7210, phone still worked fine

- Check to make sure my telephone cord is only 2-wire (even though it was the cord supplied with the until)

- Left the phone on speaker as I tried to send a fax... the dial tone seemed to drop off and then come back when I cancelled the fax... Hmmm...

- Actually READ a section of the manual Mad still worthless

- Started browsing forums... seem to be getting some good suggestions (e.g. turn off ECM, set baud rate to slow, dial *99, don't fax to eFax numbers, etc.). None of which seem to correct the issue

- Decide to run the Fax Test tool and gets passes on Hardware test, connected to an active phone jack, phone cord connected, but fails on Dial Tone detected and fax line condition test followed by the following statement, "Your fax line has a weak signal. A dial tone was not detected."

- Now I'm getting frustrated. My house is Cat5 wired and my router and Vonage box is in the mechanical room in the basement. So, I unplug the 7210, take it down to the basement and plug it directly in to Line1 on the Vonage box

Still nothing...

- So, I turn on auto answer and decide to call from my cell. Low and behold the 7210 rings, picks up and responds to my series of strange whistles (as my family looks at me like I am very "weird")

So, in summary, it would appear that I can receive faxes, but not send them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you can, take the machine somewhere where you can try it out with a regular POTS line. If it won't work there, then you can probably conclude that the machine has a problem.

What if I have referred all my friends to Vonage and no one has land lines any more??? Seriously.

I moved into my house 2 1/2 years ago and the phone company has never stepped foot in my house. I have converted firends, family, co-workers.

ANY other suggestions?

You bought the machine new? Most stores will let you return things or exchange them without question. I would try exchanging it for another one of the same model or a different model. I personally wouldn't want a machine that's so fussy that it can't work with a dial tone that you can clearly hear.

You have tried faxing out without having the speaker phone off hook haven't you? I'd certainly try that if you haven't. Are you sure that the phone line is plugged into the correct port on the HP? My Officejet 720 jacks are clearly labelled "wall jack" and "to phone", not "EXT". Also try unplugging the phone completely.

You could ask Vonage customer service to increase the volume on your phone. Most posts that I've seen- and my own experience- indicate that Vonage phones tend to be too loud if anything, but if the HP says the dial tone is too low....

If all else fails, you may want to consider trying a new Vonage adapter.

I actually have the same problem! In fact, two of my friends have the same setup and none of their 7210's work with Vonage either. Can anyone shed light on this?

I have a HP 5610 and have the same exact problem and did everything you did. Customer Service does not know how to handle it. They actually hung up on me.

I figured it out. You have to go into advanced fax settings and lower the send and recieve speed. Also, there is an advanced menu you can go to change some other settings. I found this on another website but it was not about the 7210.

I could not tell by your post if you purchased a fax line and are using the second port.

I had the exact same problem. I would hear a dial-tone and then I would not. I tried some of the things you did.

You have to activate the fax service and use the second port/extension on the back of the Vonage box.

PostPosted: Mon May 01, 2006 12:55 pm    Post subject: HP 7210 and faxing issues..help Reply with quote Back to top

I am doing my homework before going to Voip and so glad to have found this forum. I have been reading the posts about the HP 7210 which is what I have. I can understand the possible need for the speed decrease and thats ok. What does the use of *99 dialing prefix do to help?

HP told me I might not be able to fax from the front panel and may have to fax from the PC and that bugs me as the PC is not always on when I need to fax. The dialing/faxing from front panet was one reason I got the 7210. Anyone have that issue/solution?

Here is my biggest issue. My combo phone/answering machine is connected only to the HP and of course to my non Voip phone line . I know that with Voip the phone/ans. machine needs to be directly connected to the Voip Adaptor so how do I get the HP 7210 in the loop to send/receive faxes? Split it ?

When I receive faxes the HP knows to interrupt the ans. machine message and allow the fax t come and thats one of the features I like. When I sent faxes I want to be able to do it from the HP itself of course.

Bottom line is that I want to be able to use the HP features just like I do without Voip.

Help would be appreciated.
