I have seen a few posts about people having trouble with running P2P clients together with Vonage. Since P2P clients normally use all the bandwidth they can get their ports on, it's easy to run into trouble with them. This is just a note to share my success with running the P2P clients "Shareaza" and "Kazaa Lite K++" while using Vonage.
I have my vt1000 behind my router, so I don't benefit from the QOS on the voice terminal.
In my initial attempts, either one of these programs (but especially Shareaza) would clobber Vonage and cause the audio to stutter, drop out, and be all but unusable. This was mostly when uploading (one person said I sounded like I was underwater on a bad cell phone connection), but also when downloading if I had enough downloads going.
I tried changing the settings for limiting upload and download bandwidth within the programs, but the results were not very helpful.
Then I found (ok, Google found) a program called "Bandwidth Controller" from http://bandwidthcontroller.com/ which allows you to limit the bandwidth of all traffic into and out of your computer based on rules which you define.
I defined a rule limiting upload bandwidth to about 60% of the available bandwidth of my cable modem, and tried again. It works wonderfully. I can now leave both Kazaa Lite K++ and Shareaza running and just forget about them, without their affecting the phone.
Bandwidth Controller is a little pricey at $50 (I am not affiliated with them), and there is a 30-day demo version so you can try it and see whether it works for you.
Does anyone know of a free product that lets you limit bandwidth like this? Preferably before my 30 days is up?
Peace,
Joe

i need help with a problem similar to this but reversed. my Vonage has been working fine and the audios great but now when i try to use a p2p program like kazaa lite ill get really slow downloads of around 10 Kbps (i used to be able to download at 300Kbps so this is a big problem). this happens anytime even when im not making a phone call. and i discovered yesterday that when i unplugged my Vonage box thingy from my computer and cable modem that my download speeds worked fine again. im not using a router or anything and ive looked over the installation instructions a dozen times so im pretty sure i installed it right. its only when i use a p2p program that my bandwith becomes really slow. when i download sumtin from a site like download.com it will download at its normal speed. so what can i do to fix this? |

P2P will use all aviliable bandwith whether you are logged on or not (ie: filesharing) when the MTA is hookup as the router, the internal QOS function will limit your upload and download speed whether or not your on the phone. this is to reserve enough bandwith to allow an incoming call. Download speeds are directly related to the amount of bandwith you have to ACK or NAK a packet or handshake a connection. If you have to software packages trying to reserve all of the bandwith something is not going to work, as Voip is hardware P2P loses. |
