Now now.... the RTP300/WRTP54G are alright for what they were designed for -- basic routers. If you're a basic user, you probably won't have issues with them (can't vouch for the wireless, only have an RTP300)... BUT, any sort of file-sharing software absolutely pushes networking equipment to its limits. Talk with any ISP and they'll tell you it's the filesharing software that they hate the most. It constantly eats bandwidth, maxes out routing tables, etc. There are quite a few consumer routers out there (besides these Linksys models) which also fail when people run peer-to-peer filesharing programs on them. |

Hello, Vonage TPA. Thanks for your comment. I wasn't file sharing when the Linksys WRTP54G locked up. In fact, I was merely checking my email. The wireless connection still drops 15 seconds after I cycle the power. That's the one thing it does that's reliable. And no- I don't have another wireless access point within twenty meters of the WRTP54G. I have a D-Link DI-624 802.11G wireless router that I've streamed high-bandwidth video (wirelessly, as it were) over as well as file-shared and it never has had any issues. It never drops the wireless connection even with multiple users on it. It, too, falls into the "basic router" category. By the fact that this thread exists and as can be garnered from the discussion therein, my problem with the WRTP54G is not unique. I have seen other threads discussing various problems with this router and the fact stands- Vonage is marketing a Linksys product that is useful as a Voip encoder/decoder but it's additional functions are not up to snuff. I actually paid extra for those additional functions and would have done well just to get the basic, wired router (which I would have done had I known of this forum and had a chance to read about the problems with the WRTP54G.) Now I have to return the router and there will be hell to pay from "Customer Care" for it. Have you ever called Vonage "Customer Care?" Try it sometime and post here about the experience. I'd be interested to hear how you fare. Just so you are aware, the Voip functions of the WRTP54G work fine. I have no issue with that. I'm just a little irked that Vonage would sell a product that claims function as a wireless router and that function is basically unavailable to me. How many firmware upgrades will it take until I can use the wireless router function? -Victim |
