I'm getting ready to switch my Telco number to my Vonage service. I will be making my current telco number a regular Vonage line and my current Vonage line will become a Virtual number.

Does anyone know if one can call forward the virtual number independantly of the main line? I mean, for example, can I setup SimulRing on the virtual number and not on the main line? So that someone calling the virtual number will ring my cell as well as the main number but someone calling the main number only rings the main numner?

it's my understanding that virtual numbers do nothing more than ring your primary line. it will follow the rules on your primary line, but they aren't independent.

Indeed. Virtual and Toll Free numbers are kind of like aliases, or shortcuts to a main DID.

Thanks guys! Can a virtual number be converted to a real line later on?

As I said, my main Vonage number will become a virtual number once I convert my telco number to Vonage. I'd hate to loose the option to convert it back to a regular (2nd line) once it's been converted to a virtual number.

Thanks.

You can make a virtual number a main DID if you want. The virtual number will be assigned to a phone port and get a voicemail, call waiting of its own, etc etc. Of course you are going to have to have a ticket created to tier3 for this.

Heh, I started this process on the 18th of flipping my virtual number to my primary line. Well, they did make my primary a virtual number, but gave me a completely new primary number not in my area code, and deleted a OH visrtual number I had created 1 week ago...

I am usually a happy Vonage customer, but this is starting to get ridiculous. Now when people call my number, they get all lines are busy.

UPDATE-After 31 mins 47 seconds into the call I am dropped...Good lord.

Instead of a virtual number, consider a softphone line. Softphone has all the forwarding controls of your main account, and all the features. (voicemail, etc)

The virtual number reports directly to the main account number.

Can you shed some light on what needs to be done to accomplish this change?

Telco Line -> Vonage Prime number
Current Vonage Prime number -> Softphone.

Perhaps I should let the change happen:
Telco Line -> Vonage Prime number
Current Vonage Prime number -> Virtual Number

by simply doing the "Change Number" request
and then request my Virtual number be converted to a SoftPhone?

What do you mean exactly by:
"The virtual number reports directly to the main account number."

It is my understanding that the the numbers hold independant minutes.

I have to admit, if I cannot get my current Vonage main number converted to a SoftPhone I see little use for me to actually keep it as a Virtual Number that has no additional functionality than the main number. Softphone on the other hand sound like a great idea.

I would like to think that it will be, but nope...I called back again and after being on hold for 9 minutes, I got a rep. I explained that my last call was dropped and what happened with my account, he said hold on and "click" dead air...

So after I ate my dinner, I called the cancellation line. The gentleman there read back my requests, and said that it should be done within 24 hours. I really hope so, because at this point if I don't have the number that was given to me orginally, then what is the reasoning in staying with Vonage to get a whole new number. And, no one I spoke with could figure out where the mystery 203 areacode number which is now my primary came from. I was charged for it, but never requested it...
