PostPosted: Sun Jan 22, 2006 8:46 pm    Post subject: Already a Vonage user, considering moving my Bell line? Reply with quote Back to top

Like many others I presume I signed up for Vonage to try it out and requested a new number nine months ago. I have since adopted that Vonage number and still use my Bell Canada number. I seem to be a prime candidate for a Virtual number client. I have the basic 500 plan.

I looked at my options and I cannot find all the answers I'm looking for. I have come up with a few options to transfer my Bell Canada number to Vonage:

Option 1:
Keep my existing Vonage number as my primary number and add my current Bell Canada number as a Virtual number.

Questions with this option:
I cannot find how to request a virtual number and use my current Bell Canada number. I only have the option to request a new number. Perhaps I can request a new number and ask it to be changed to my current Bell Canada number later? Can I tell which number was called (either by ring tones or call display) when people call me?

Option 2:
Request a second Vonage line to my existing account and use my current Bell Canada number.

Questions with this option:
Are the minutes for the second line added up to the account or are they maintained separately by number? Can a number be converted to a virtual number from a line later on to accomplish Option 1? Can I forward the 2nd line to my current main account number?

Option 3:
Request a Vonage SoftPhone number with my current Bell Canada number.

Question with this option:
I cannot see how I can specify to use my current Bell Canada number as the number to use with the SoptPhone. Can I forward my calls to my main Vonage number transparently and basically use it like a virtual number?

Other question:
I have read that the incoming calls don't count as used minutes for the 500 minute plan. Is this true for all circumstances or just for the virtual numbers.

Perhaps others have gone through these dilemmas and can point me in the solution that best fit my situation.

Option 1:

I don't think that you can port your Bell number to be a virtual number. I would suggest that you ask Vonage's LNP specialist about that. They can be reached at 416-907-6161 or lnp_canada@vonage.com A virtual number only functions to receive calls and to forward them to your primary number. You won't be able to tell what number an incoming call dialed from by the ring tone or call display (although presumably, your incoming calls from the area of virtual number will be calling your virtual number). You will only be able to tell by checking your dashboard.

Option 2:

You could port your Bell number to be a second Vonage line if you like. If you choose this option, you will have to select a rate plan to go with it just like when you set up your first line. I don't know if you could convert it to virtual number later on. You could forward your second line to your first line but you would still be paying for both lines. Keep in mind that a second line is different from a virtual number. A second line would plug into your line 2 port and would function independently from your first line. Both lines could make and receive calls. A virtual number only allows you to select a number from the location of your choice for incoming calls. Calls into your virtual number are automatically forwarded to your primary number. You can't place outgoing calls from your virtual number as it shares the same line as your primary number.

Option 3:

Sorry, I can't help you that one.

Other question:

You heard it right. Incoming calls are unlimited on all plans! Sweet deal.

Thanks miket603 for that lengthy answer! I will contact Vonage and inquire about the porting.

I guess another option would be to port my Bell Canada number as a prime number and convert my current number as a Virtual number.

i'll let you know what I get back from the LNP folks.

I would assume tha option 1 should be possible as Vonage has this in their FAQ:

What is the advantage to keeping my old number as a virtual number?

Only thing is they don't say how to do it...

From my billing tab in my Dashboard I can request to change my phone number. I did not see this at first but it looks like I can keep my existing Vonage number as a Virtual number. This is what I was describing as my option 1 but reversing the Bell and Vonage numbers which makes more sense I guess.
