Just a quick question. As stated in the subject line, I have a Vonage Linksys WRT54GP2 router. I am currently considering cancelling Vonage altogether and just going with Shaw Digital Phone. (Too many problems with Vonage right now and I need something more stable, long story not relevant here.)

Anyway, when I cancel my Vonage does this device become unusable? I am assuming the Voip portion is locked to Vonage and I do not really care about that. I would, however, still like to use the WRT54GP2 for wireless access point and a switch. Anybody know what happens to the WRT54GP2 when you cancel Vonage? Is it still usable and firmware upgradeable? Confused

Also, could I sell this unit to somebody else and they activate it with a new Vonage account? Anybody know Vonage's policy on this?

Hi.. soirry to hear you're having too many problems with your Vonage, have to asked here to see if there are any fixed to your problems??
to answer your questions,

yes, it will still work just fine as a wireless router..

and no, you can't sel it to someone for them to use for Vonage, after you cancel it's a router and thats it. Vonage won't activate used ATA's..

Thanks. I've had (and I am still having) multiple problems:
- echo
- not transmitting my voice to caller
- stutter, call breakup
- caller id being dropped, plus weird caller ids
- and of course voice mail

Many of these problems come and go with no apparent explanation as to why. In short, my Vonage phone is simply unreliable.

<begin rant>

Right now Vonage might be okay for a 2nd line but it is far from stable enough to make it my primary phone. Perhaps after another year or two it will evolve into a more stable product. Or perhaps my Linksys WRT54GP2 is the culprit. Maybe it is both.

My internet connection is with Shaw, the high speed package where I can upload at 60KB/sec and download at ~630KB/sec. This connection has been rock solid since the day I got it, no problems whatsoever and even when I am having Vonage problems my Internet connection is just fine. I've tried multiple configs including QoS settings but still the problems come and go. My WRT54GP2 has the latest firmware too. My internet connection could be idle or busy when these problems happen. Simply put I can not find any correlation between my Vonage problems and my Internet status. Sometimes unplugging my WRT54GP2 clears it up, other times it does not.

Forget trying to e-mail Vonage tech support, the last time I did it took them 2+ weeks to reply back. Calling their tech support has been hit and miss too. During my last call the tech just hung up on me. He already had my phone number and account info before the hang up but never tried to contact me back and I waited all evening for his return call. That was the last straw for me. Bye-bye Vonage, I'm switching over to Shaw Digital phone and getting a real phone instead.

That leaves this WRT54GP2 router I am using with Vonage and what to do with it. I was just trying to determine what options I have and since Vonage will not let another customer use it with their system (why doesn't that surprise me), I guess I will hang on to it and use as a WAP.
