PostPosted: Sat Jan 21, 2006 2:34 am    Post subject: The Voip Test show no problems but the audio goes in and out Reply with quote Back to top

i know this is a long post and am real thankful if you can read thru it and see when my problems may lie

this started back in december when Vonage moved to their new offices and has just become worst this last 3 weeks

the audio on my phones goes in and out for 2-20+ seconds constantly during calls and a lot of time it just drops the line after it has faded out for over 20 seconds.

i have run the speed test here and the boston call test and they seam to come back good (posted below) does anyone see anything in these results to point to my problem. is it Vonage or my isp or setup

*****speed test here:

Download 3,631,320 bps
Upload 307,736 bps
QOS 79%
RTT 17 ms
MaxPause172 ms

Given your current Internet speeds, we estimate that your Internet connection can support a maximum of 4 simultaneous high quality Vonage® Voip connections

*****Boston call test

ok now for my setup

isp time warner cable houston texas

cable modem is toshiba pcx 1100u
(plugged into the wan port on my Vonage router)
RP31T2 (192.168.15.1 dhcp on-100 to 150 qos on)
(phone jack #2 feeds the house via a phone jack in the room with the routers... i was on phone jack #1 until vongage tried to fix other problem and they move me to #2 - could not connect to 979-399 exchange-)
port 1 goes to port 1 on my netgear router for wireless
port 2 goes to a netcam
port 3 goes to a printserver

on my netgear mr814 (192.168.15.2 dhcp off)
port 1 goes to port 1 of the RP31T2 (i saw other post on how to link them and this was the best way so i could see all my ip address and access both routers - plugging into the wan port would not let me see all the adresses)
port 2 -empty
port 3 - desktop pc that i only turn on about 1 hr a month
port 4 - linux destop pc that i only turn on about 1 hr every 6 months

my only thoughts are that the cable modem being a dosis 1.0 spec may be the problem

does any-one see problems with my test results or setup.... i have had almost no problems until Vonage moved in december.

misc extra info
i do most of my pc work via my wireless laptop but it is usually not on when these problems happen. there are 4 other wireless networks my laptop can see in my area but i am on channel 6 and all the others are on 1 or 11.

phones are 1 cordless 49 MHz panasonic so i know that 802.11 is not my problem or it would get interferance from the other wireless networks and 1 uniden 2.4 GHz base + 2 handsets

thank-you for reading thru this i know it is a lot but i wanted to give you all the info so we can solve this problem

I'm no expert but your problem lies with packet discards.

The only way to test whether it's the Vonage adapter or not is to remove it and connect your computer directly to your modem and run the test again. If you still get similar levels of packet discards, then its your ISP. But the high packet discards will result in audio cutting out on you.

Actually the packet discard % is fine (Packet Discards 2.7% and Packet Discards 1.8%). Those numbers identify the degradation source and what percentage each source contributes to the overall degradation. They do not tell you what percentage of packets are discarded due to latency and jitter.

Regrading a-dhold problem, have you tried connecting your phone directly to the Vonage adapter to see if the problem still exist? It could be an inside wiring problem.

The audio cuts out on a regular basis every 10 seconds or so for about 1.5 secs. This is audible on both ends of the call.

I can't even call Vonage to report it because they can't hear me, and my cell phone is not here at the moment.

it looks like it might be the 2.4 ghz phones we use since there are 4+ 802.11 networks in my area.. i was able to talk to my wife on a 49 mhz phone with almost no drop-outs... and it seams to point to the 802.11 since its worst from 6p-10p

my goal now is to try out a wired phone to see if most of the drop-out go away 7p-10p then try 900mhz and 5.8Ghz

I agree that it's the 2.4Ghz phones that's causing the problem. I suspect once you switch to your other phones, everything will work smoothly.
