PostPosted: Fri Jan 20, 2006 8:27 pm    Post subject: Incoming Call Problem Reply with quote Back to top

Hello All,

I am having a problem with an imcoming call from my dad. He calls me but always get a message from an operator that his call cannot be completed as dialed and to please hang up and try his call again because he may have the wrong number. I have a 803-632 number and for my small town back home its local for him to call me. he calls other numbers in that area and exchange with no problem. he only has problems when he calls my number. it is a local call for our area. my mom and aunts call with no problems. its just my dad. i have had Vonage since the 9th of this month and i love it so far. i just cant understand why my dad cant get thru to me without hearing that error message. also when my mom and aunts call all they have to dial is 7 digits and when i call them all i have to dial is 7 digits. we never dial a 1 or area code. i am hoping that my mom wont have an outrageously high phone bill or anything cause now i am kinda suspicous that it may not be local to them. my dad doesnt have long distance on his phone but neither does my mom so i kinda ruled that out as being the problem cause she can reach me just fine by only dialing 7 digits. any help would be greatly appreciated and thankyou.

Was your phone number assigned by Vonage or did you port an existing number? I don't know how SC is laid out as far as area codes are concerned, but here in Washington Vancouver shares an area code with Port Angeles, and the 2 cities are nowhere near each other. On my old land line when I would try to call a Port Angeles number I would get the, "Your call cannot be completed as dialed..." message all the time. I think it was because of the shared area code even though they were long distance from each other (we didn't have long distance service on our land line). I'm wondering if Vonage somehow assigned you a phone number that is local for your mom and aunt, but long distance for your dad. Of course, if you ported an existing number then this is moot.

thats a Fairfax, SC number.. is that where your dad lives?
was he ever able to dial this number in the past?
have you tried to dial that number form your cell or a friends house or soemwhere, to see if the number is working?

area code 803 is pretty big, covers a large part of the Midlands, it's posible that you got a phone number for the wrong town.. and in turn is Long Distance.. that exchange is from Fairfax, so if your dad doesn't live there, then you need to contact Vonage and get a different number.

Go here to find exactly where a prefix is located.> http://www.thedirectory.org/pref/ 3 cures I can think of if your Father is not in the local calling area.

1. Have him contact his phone company and include your calling area. Cost unknown.

2. If Vonage supports the area your father is in set up a Virtual number Cost $10 bucks+ $5 bucks a month.

3. Get a Vonage Toll-free number. Cost $10 bucks to establish + $5 bucks a month for 100 minutes. Run out of minutes? Just 04˘ a minute. Lots of folk have my toll free number and I seldom use 100 minutes. Best idea since they invented rolled toilet paper!

No, i did not port my number. i just let Vonage give me a total new number all together. I wanted a fairfax, SC number because i am originally from estill, sc and wanted my family there to be able to call me like a local call because we are a military family and we move around a lot. local exhanges for estill(625) is hampton(934), brunson(632) and fairfax(632). my mom, aunt and dad all live in estill. so no matter where they all are in estill they should be able to dial fairfax for local. my dad calls other people in fairfax with the 632 exchange all the time but he just cant get me. he lives closer to fairfax than my mom does and she can call me with no problem and so can my aunt. my dad doenst have long distance on his line, but neither does my mom and she can call just fine. anybody with a 625 exchange can all a 632 exchange and it is considered local. my mom, dad and aunt all have 625 exchanges but the only one having probs is my dad. thanks for all the help so far.

hrmm.. Confused
do they all have the same carrier? probably so, being a small town and being all with the same exchange, but it's alll I can think of right now.. sometimes ppl have had trouble calling a new Vonage number because their carrier hasn't added the number to their list yet, but this seems unlikely the case here, since other ppl in your family's exchage can call this number, and your dad can call other numbers with your exchange..

have you contacted Vonage, and/or your dad's carrier??
is your dad friends enough with his neighbours to ask them if he could try their phone to dial your number?
