Hi everyone, I just received my Vonage router today. linksys model rtp300. I am using a netgear wgr614v5 router. My internet connection works perfectly fine, until I pick up the phone. Then my wireless internet is disconnected. As soon as the phone is hung up, I automatically reconnect. I have tried going to the site 192.168.15.1 but receive a time-out error everytime. Can someone please offer advice? Thanks.

Are you using a cordless telephone? A 2.4 GHz cordless will interfere with a wireless router and cause problems.

To get to the RTP at the address you gave, your computer has to be plugged into the RTP, not into the WGR. You can set things up to get access to the RTP with computers plugged into the WGR, but to do it you need to first get access to change settings.

Yes, I am using a 2.5ghz corless phone. Damn. Is there any way I can confirm this is the problem before going out and purchasing a new telephone? The connection is only interrupted briefly when turning the phone on or off. Thank You for your help.

Are the WGR or the cordless phone also new to your configuration?

Assuming they are fighting over a frequency...

A few tips on making 2.4ghz cordless and 2.4ghz WiFi work:

1. Choose channel 1, 6, or 11 on the WiFi (WGR). These three channels tend to be the furthest from anything cordless handsets tend to use.

2. Try different channels on the WGR and different channels on the handset.

3. DO NOT place the cordless base and the WGR right next to each other. Separate them by a couple of feet, at least. Otherwise, same frequency or no, they will almost certainly mess with each others' signal.

4. "Rabbit Ear" time. Play around with the antennae between the WGR and the cordless phone, trying to make sure the antennae are not aligned with each other (not both pointing in the same direction like this "| |", you want the antennae oriented off a little from each other like "| /" or "| _" - the strongest radiation comes out of the longest radiator, so if you can get the two antennae so they are not talking directly to each other, it might help.

5. Play around with placement of the units. Put one up on a shelf, and the other on a desk. That sort of thing.

Yes, this is the first time I've used the phone. I've always just had a cell phone before. The WGR is not new, however. I've been using that for about 8 months. I have a Cable modem through Time Warner.
Right now the WGR is on the top shelf of my desk and the phone is on the actual desk. It's still not working. Thanks for trying though.

Easiest fix is to swap the 2.4ghz phone out for a 5.8ghz or a 900mhz.

But channel 1, 6, or 11 *should* work unless it's a spread spectrum cordless phone or something.

The default on the WGR was 11 and 1 wouldn't work either. I'm trying out 6 now and it seems to be working so far. Knock on wood. Thanks!

I spoke too soon. I made about 5 or 6 attempts to my cell phone before it started disconnecting me again. Now it either disconnects me, or the internet connection is very slow. Any other suggestions or am I SOL?

What model cordless is it? Is it a digital/encrypted or spread spectrum unit?

I have two 2.4Ghz cordless bases (AT&T and Uniden) in my house, one right near my wireless router (about 2.5 feet, but down on the desk where the router is up on a shelf) and one on the other side of the house (I have my Vonage line tied into house wiring). Never had the slightest problem, but I'm also in a rural area where I get the whole spectrum to myself.

The 5.8ghz variant of it has spread spectrum with frequency hopping for security, according to an online review. If you have the 2.4ghz variant, then it's going to jump around to different frequencies at random to keep people from listening in.

If that's a 2.4ghz, see if you can take it back to the BX and see if they have a 5.8ghz
