if you want a built in Vonage phone, the uniden version is a better choice. and the rtp300 and wrt54g is a better choice than the wrtp54g. some of it is personal preferance, some of it is experience. |

I have the 8100-2 and purchased a third handset. I could not be happier with the performance and features. Plugged it into my existing router, was up and placing calls 5 minutes later. That's what I wanted. Simplicity. Be glad to answer specific questions if you have them. |

I also have the VTech unit and am very pleased with it. I had an issue with initial setup, but it was resolved via customer service. The phones are quality phones with all the features I need. |

Could you elaborate on this? I'm considering a Vonage trial, and am leaning toward the WRTP54G. I'm currently happily using a WRT54G in my wireless home network, which I would give to my son if this works out.
I'm not a bit-torrent user, or do other intensive file-sharing, and the current Linksys performs well with downloads with my 4500 kbps cable-modem, and seems to meet my needs.
Thanks.

Can you tell from the handset whether or not you have voicemail waiting?
My cable modem comes out in my spare bedroom, and there's no phone jack there. I don't want to walk into the spare bedroom just to see if I have a waiting message.
I'm currently trying to decide between the IP8100 and a regular phone adaptor and paying someone to run a phone jack to the bedroom. If I had the new phone jack put in, I'd hook into the house wiring and continue to use my current answering machine. Not having to walk into that spare room to check for messages is pretty important to me, and I'm not sure how else I could accomplish that. |

If you recieve a new voicemail, it will display that message on the handset. If you recieve new calls it will also display that. |

Yeah, I want to put my thumbs up for the V-Tech 8100-2. Easy to hook up and works great. I never liked V-Tech prior to this, but these phones are super. |

I would like to get this device but have some questions.
First can I disable the firewall and other functions being performed by my linksys router ?
Second can I just buy one of these or has Vonage progressed to being like cell phone companies where you have to sign a contract just to get the phone ?
Also does the uniden one work with Vonage ? The only uniden unit I have seen was for packet 8. |

As to your first question when we hooked up our phones we didn't have to disable anything including my firewall and on our network we use Zone Alarm Professional.
My wife hooked it up, I was just discussing this with her. She said it took longer to read the directions then to hook it up. She said all she really did was plug the main unit into our router (linksys WRT54G) and it was ready. I then logged on to the Vonage site and the phone was working no more then 10 minutes later.
I didn't sign a contract, but I think the TOS says there is a cancellation fee. You may want to look at that. |
