Everywhere -- and I mean EVERYWHERE -- there are Vonage ads, and they all direct you to Vonage or a reseller and offer the potential signee a free month. What's in it for someone to sign with you and wait for Vonage to mail a startup kit when they can head for the nearest dealer and be up and running the first day? I think you know the answer.

I got a friend to sign up recently and told him he had to sign up via my Vonage e-mail solicitation. What did he do? He called Customer Service and asked if he could pick up the starter package at Best Buy and have me receive the credit. The nitwit told him he could, so there went my free months. Vonage could see him on my account as having requested him to sign up, but of course, that won't work. And do you think Vonage replied to my e-mail? I bet you can guess the answer to that too.

To top it all off, he even called Vonage later, after signing up, and they still told him I would be credited.

Well, I wrote the whole thing off, but you can bet I won't be telling anyone else to sign up.

Maybe a litte patience would have worked better in this case. You should have known a retial purchase was not going to get a referral credit Question

Sounds like the problem started when your friend did not follow the instructions you gave him on how to sign up. Crying

I just noticed today that you had to buy equipment from Vonage. I immediately removed the one person I had referred.

Seems to me that a referral is a referral, and Vonage should be happy with that. On the other hand, a rule is a rule and they are the ones who make up the offer.

I still will recommend Vonage, but I see no point in doing the referral.

The bad thing about this story is that a Vonage representative repeatedly lies that you will be getting a referal credit when you wont, just to get your friend to sign. Did anyone else notice that?

Vonage rep repeatedly lying?!?! (horror) noooo! You can look high and low on this forum and you'll never find an example of someone being told the wrong information from a Vonage rep.

not even one.

Lol

It never ceases to amaze me how little some people read. I signed up for Vonage (before I worked here) and, all on my own, I somehow understood perfectly 911, the terms of service, my method of billing, how my phones would be hooked up to the device, my web account, and yes, referring a friend.

I didn't have any delusions of all the phones in my house just magically working, I didn't get surprised when my phone stopped working when comcast had an outage, I knew how to go about referring a friend if I chose to, and I had no trouble comprehending how my Bittorrent activity was destroying my call quality.

So the information IS there, you can't blame Vonage if you didn't take the time to read it.

My calls actually destroy my bittorrent download quality Very Happy I can be downloading some shareware or royalty free music at 250kb/s or so and dial out on the phone and it goes to 25kb/s Rolling Eyes Fine with me though.

The problem is that the average non technical person sees a Vonage ad that mentions how much money they can save and they never really even wonder if the technology works as well as their current phone, they just assume it does. Obviously Vonage is not going to say in there ads that it depends on the quality of their broadband connection and how they hold their jaw while setting up their equipment. So, its buyer beware and do your research such as reading a forum like this before diving in.

Does my Vonage line work as well as my old SBC line as far as quality. Nope. But I like the price for the features I get and I also like being an early adopter of new technology. Saying I have Voip sounds kewl. If you can hear me say it clearly. Smile

It's totally true and has been discussed before, how Vonage ads make it seem like any drooling idiot can use Vonage under any circumstance. Sales teams only reinforce it because of course they have incentives to close more sales. There is a certain DIY factor that needs to be better understood. When I get a customer on the phone that says "I can't do anything." when I tell them to turn on the computer to check internet speeds, I want to scream "**** made you think Vonage was a good idea if you can't turn on a computer!" I guess the answer is, the catchy ads and the lure of saving money.

Bottom line, do some research before you dive into it. I have no sympathy for people who dive in headlong, get business cards printed up, begin porting numbers over, and basically risk their livelihoods without knowing how this technology works, who their ISP even is, or what a packet is.
