Does anyone know if this phone is compatible with our Vonage business account? I have read a review that said you can't use this phone with a DSL connection b/c of data transfer interference. This article looks like it was written in 2001 or so, and I realize that we have a cable modem for our Vonage, but wanted to make sure before we get the system.

Thanks!

I don't see why not. It's a 4-line system, but it takes analog phone lines like any other phone. Each Vonage phone line will feed ONE of the four lines in the phone, of course...

I had the AT&T 962 2-line speakerphone for a while, and it worked great with Vonage.

Thanks! The article just said that the system required analog and not DSL. Should I check with AT&T or just order the system?

I'm not even sure what the article was talking about, except maybe that old DSL sometimes put interference on the analog line it was "piggybacking" on, but I can't imagine a particular phone would have a problem with it more than others.

Vonage puts out analog phone lines. Very similar to the phone lines you'd get on a POTS analog line. Plug it into any phone that supports analog lines, and it should just... work.

To fully support the phone, you'll need four Vonage lines, of course, or there's little point in buying a 4-line phone. The AT&T phone does not change the number of analog lines you have.

We are actually just using 2 Vonage lines and will be connecting 6 phones in the office, with the one line. We don't need 4 lines, but may expand to that in the future. I am setting this up for someone else (I have used Vonage at home for over a year and a half).

http://telecom.hellodirect.com/docs/reviews/ATTKSUless.1.032601.asp

Here is the article. I assume the numbers in the web address are the date, 03/26/01?

At the very bottom is this statement:
1All of the phone lines used with AT&T 964 and 955 phones must be analog. Also, due to frequency interference during data transmissions, DSL lines cannot be used with these phones.
2This same rule applies to the AT&T 955 phones.

OK! Now I see what they mean. That's a damned sophisticated phone system, by the way. Schweet. What a difference from the 962 to the 964!

Anyway, what they mean (I think) is that the 964 uses the same high-frequency range to transmit data from phone to phone as DSL uses to send the data over the POTS copper. Since Vonage does not use those frequencies, I *think* you'd be OK.

A call to AT&T and/or Vonage may be in order, though. Your proposed system uses standard phone lines, but those DSL-frequency signals may cause issues.

PS: Wouldn't matter if you DID have DSL, by the way, on a Vonage line. The RJ11 the Vonage signal is on is not the same as your regular DSL line, it's part of the Vonage adapter. So the connection from the Vonage adapter out to the Internet is irrelevant. Confused yet?

Just to build on this, if you did notice problems caused by those signals you might be able to use a DSL filter at the adapter to prevent them from interfering with the adapter.

The phones themselves likely employ an internal DSL filter to prevent the tones from damaging the audio quality.
