I can virtually guarantee that you will have call quality issues because of your speeds.

If your upload speed (i.e. from you to the person you are calling) is only up to 50kbps and Vonage is normally defaulted to using 90kbps, then you have exceeded your speed and therefore, the quality of the call will suffer significantly.

To make matters worse, you have very bad packet loss and discards both ways. This easily explains why you have bad dropped calls.

It does not automatically imply however, that you have a bad Vonage router.

I suspect that your speeds of 600 down / 50 up is not the advertised speed from your Road runner cable company.

Run the test by connecting your computer directly to your modem and see if your results are any better. That would be a better test of whether your Vonage router is really the problem.

If the results are similar then the problem is not your Vonage router, but your ISP. I would call them and ask them to come out and check your signals and cables.

I agree on all of Mundy's points. What's really disconcerting is that those speeds are simply not consistent with cable service. Something is screwy somewhere.

The first router I had didn't drop the calls though. It wouldn't disconnect from the internet randomly. It seems like a load balancing issue. Does Vonage stock a dfferent type of router besides the one I have?

You can use dialup from Vonage just fine. I can get 50Kbps + connects with a good modem. (Sucky modems won't do as well though. No need to use a crappy modem anymore; you can buy USR V.Everything modems for nothing now.) Use *99W (or *99, - including the comma - if you can't use W, like Windows won't let you do) as a dial prefix.

Dudeicon,

Let me suggest that you temporarily remove the Vonage adapter from your setup and plug a computer directly into your cable modem. Then repeat the speed tests and Voip tests. Post the results.

Is the speed you're getting consistent with what Road Runner is promising? I find it hard to believe. If removing the adapter doesn't get you decent speed, and if Road Runner promises more, then you need to talk to them about it. If removing the adapter substantially improves your speed, then I suspect that you have a bad adapter. That would be a subject of discussion with Vonage.

I use dialup over Vonage, because I need to get access to some computers that are only accessable that way. I had to lower the speed to 9600 baud however. That's the speed of a fax, BTW. I did bring home a computer from work one day, at it was able to connect at a higher speed, but I don't know why.

Enodo, cheap modems suck when you use them over Voip. Perhaps the second computer you brought home had a half-decent modem.

I've had good luck with US Robotics V.Everything modems, although the Conexant in my notebook also works pretty well considering that it is a softmodem.

I apologize for not responding sooner. I am off the modem subject, but do wish to attempt to correct the dropped calls situation. I will be troubleshooting this weekend, hope to receive feedback from my posts.
