Vonage outbound caller id is causing me problems. On all my outbound calls the caller id reads "vonage holding" with my number. The problem is many phones think I am a telemarketer and my calls are rejected without the other phone ever ringing. On the first ring their phone will pick up and say something like "we do not accept calls from telemarketers" and I cannot even leave voice mail. It seems like more and more people have this "feature" on their phone and the list of people I can call is getting shorter and shorter.

Any ideas?

I am not experiencing the same problems you are, frankly I am suprised that you are having these issues since many cell phones also don't provide unique caller name information.

I can not think of how a phone would reject your call unless you were specifically blocking caller id. As such I have serious doubts about the severity and the nature of the problem you are experiencing. If this problem is truly happening it may be that some phone company local to you has included "Vonage Holdings" in their internal list of calls to be blocked. If so then you need to contact them and ask them to stop blocking your calls. You may want to also file a complaint against them with your State's public utilities commission.

If there are any numbers that you could provide (businesses only please) that I could test with feel free to PM me with them and get a better understanding of your problem.

There is very litle at this time you can do to change the situation. One suggestion might be to look into caller id spoofing services.

It is certainly annoying to have "Vonage Holdings" show up on the caller id, but, I am also annoyed when I see "Wireless Caller" or "VA Caller" show up on my caller id. Hopefully Vonage will be able to make some progress in improving the service for existing customers in several areas relating to caller ID and both incoming and outgoing calls.

We don't support outgoing caller id with name - If it works for you, as it does for some people, great, but don't cry when it disappears tomorrow because some local LEC changes some equipment or does some kind of update.

However, it should NOT read Vonage Holdings when you call out. That is something we may be able to rectify. Your caller ID only displays what it is sent.

(So everyone calling up to complain that your friends Info isn't showing up as it is supposed to can tell their friends to call their phone company)

I'm also curious as to whether your number is being blocked based on the CID or on the number called from...is this an LNP number or one we assigned you?

It has been reported quite frequently that the name shows up as "Vonage Holdings", what should be displayed, "unknown"?

This is a number I received from Vonage not a ported number. Other people in my area who have Vonage do not have the same problems I have and their caller ID also does not show up as "vonage holdings".

All of the people that I call with this problem have no idea what the problem could be and are not blocking me.

This is getting really annoying as it seems to be occuring more frequently.

Qwest is the local RBOC here.

Document and file a PUC complaint against the phone company of the people whom you are calling. They are the ones doing the blocking. It would probably help if you got one of the people who can not receive your calls to call the phone company directly and complain and cosign the complaint with you since they have more standing.

Below is a description of Qwest's privacy feature. Although it sounds a bit like what is happening to you, you should be able to get past their screening to the party. I suggest you actually try blocking your caller ID information (*67) when you attempt to call these parties. Perhaps actually blocking the information will allow you to get past the security screener. emphasis mine

Qwest Security Screen wrote:

Qwest® Security Screen™service can help you avoid unwanted interruptions from telemarketers and unidentified callers. Security Screen service works with Caller ID service to identify every call you receive so that you can decide whether or not to answer. It screens calls that would normally appear as "unavailable", "out-of-area", "unknown", "anonymous", "blocked" or "private" on your Caller ID box and instructs callers to identify themselves to complete their call. With Security Screen, you can avoid unwanted interruptions without missing calls you want.

Security Screen service intercepts blocked and unidentified calls before they ring your phone. It instructs solicitors to hang up and tells other callers to either unblock their numbers or enter the telephone numbers they're calling from. Security Screen service alerts you with a special ring when callers have identified themselves using Security Screen. Calls from callers who do not identify themselves do not ring your phone.

Features

* Security Screen works 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can turn it on or off by dialing the Qwest Update Center at 1-888-(area code)-8052.
* Pre-recorded announcements explain to callers that you do not accept unidentified calls. The announcements also explain how callers can identify themselves to complete their calls.
* A special announcement is played to callers with unidentified numbers instructing them to hang-up if they are solicitors. Most solicitors call from unidentified numbers.
* Security Screen alerts you with a special ring when an unidentified caller has input their telephone number. The special ring lets you know that your caller has entered the number displayed on your Caller ID box.
* If Security Screen can identify a calling name for the number a caller entered, it will display the name with an asterisk (*) as well as the number. Otherwise, it will display "Security Screen" and the number.

Benefits

* Virtually every call includes identification. Callers must unblock their numbers or enter their telephone numbers to let you know who's calling. The number that appears is the number entered by the caller and not necessarily the number from which the call is placed.
* Unidentified calls don't ring your phone. Unidentified callers are given the option to identify themselves by unblocking their numbers or entering a telephone number. This prevents most telemarketers using auto-dialers from ringing you because they do not have the ability to unblock or input a telephone number.
* Callers do not have to hang-up to unblock their numbers. Callers can unblock their numbers by pressing 1. They do not have to hang-up, unblock, and re-dial your number.
* Identified callers are not inconvenienced. Calls made from numbers that are not blocked and are not unavailable ring your phone normally. Identified callers do not hear Security Screen announcements.

Prices and package components subject to change. Prices vary by state of service location and do not include other charges such as CALC, zone increment, EAS, USF, taxes or regulatory surcharges. Security Screen requires compatible display unit available at an additional charge. The display unit shows listed name/number of the phone line your caller is using, when available. Not all numbers/names will be displayed, logged or blocked. Security Screen requires Caller ID subscription at separate monthly charge and activation fee. Security Screen not compatible with Last Call Return or optional Customer Ringing service. Other limitations and restriction apply. Some services not available in all areas. Line installation charge may apply if you are not a Qwest wireline customer. Ask your Qwest Service Representative for details.

I may be confused, but, going back to the original post, it would seem that any actual blocking is being attributed to the end user's telephone equipment and not to the phone company. The phone company is merely guilty (if you're correct) of providing an ID that the terminal equipment is programmed to dislike.

If you are referring to this,
troutman wrote:

I did not make a distinction between called party's phone and their "phone service" and thus attributed it to their local phone company doing the blocking. This is further corroborated by this statement
troutman wrote:

If the called parties have installed specific products on their phones to reject blocked calls then they should still allow unknown/out-of-area calls through. They should care little about a call from someone named "Vonage Holdings" and pass that without issue.

I have the little idea forming in the back of my head that troutman was assigned a number that formerly belonged to a telemarketer and is specifically being blocked. troutman needs to identify if his problems are occurring only on local calls to Qwest numbers and not on long distance, cell or local calls to a CLEC.

troutman have you googled your phone number to see if you can find out who it was previously assigned to?
