Maybe if Vonage would provide Outgoing Caller ID this would not be a problem. Just another reason to read the fine print before you sign up. I love Vonage and the money that it saves me but, they still need to add a couple of features before their service would be perfect. Outgoing CID would be one of them.

They do provide outgoing CID, just number only (for now). Personally, I'm rather happy that it only shows my # and not my name.

The real problem here is very simple. Vonage buys blocks of numbers from carriers and resell them to their customers. The entire block that is sold to Vonage is updated in the LIDB data base as "Vonage Holdings". When your Vonage service is set up Vonage must have that particular number updated in the LIDB with the new customer name "John Doe". Open a ticket with Vonage and have the CNAM corrected and it will then reflect your name on calls. This works when the LEC does a data base dip on your number via the SS7 network and delivers the small packet of information containing the caller ID and name to the person you call.

Mitchdev;

The Vonage site does not agree with what you post for correcting outbound caller ID with Name.

Here is what they say:
Help - How is your Caller ID different from traditional Caller ID?
Vonage's Caller ID with Name feature is identical to traditional Caller ID, except for the fact that on outbound calls (calls you make), only your phone number (and not your name) will show on Caller ID with Name units of the party you are calling.

Is the above incorrect and a call to Vonage will provide Ooutbound Caller ID with name?

I've been with Vonage for over 3 years now. I know when I first got service with them it would say "Vonage Holdings" on the caller ID of people that I called. I don't know if it still does that or not. I haven't had anyone say anything to me in a long time about what's showing up on their caller ID when I call them. I'll have to ask someone and see what I'm showing up as.

The Vonage network itself does have to provide outbound caller ID. Calls are terminated by the local LEC unless it is a Voip to Voip call. If the person you call subsrcibes to caller ID name and number the LEC does a LIDB data base dip using the originating Vonage number and delivers that information to the end user.

I know this from working in the industry for 20 years and with carriers that actually terminate the Vonage traffic.

I always felt that it can't be that complicated to support outbound Caller ID name, but why is Vonage making such a fuss about this if it is as simple as updating the CNAM in the LIDB. That's the part I don't get. I had my number transfered from SBC and I always thought the name would stick, but some people reported that the name may disappear after a while. Since you claim to be an expert, can you shed some more light on these points please? BTW, aside from calling somebody and asking them what name shows on their caller ID (nobody I know has caller ID on their land line), is there a way to submit a query to the LIDB over the web to verify the name associated with the number?

This is clumsy and dumb-sounding, but I just tested it and it seems to work...

Call your own Vonage number, let it ring until it goes to voicemail, then hang up. Go to the dashboard, and your Caller ID data should appear as an incoming call. From yourself. Wink

At least, in my case, it appears with my phone number twice (the second time without the "1"), which if I recall correctly is the data that used to appear on my cell back when I had one. Wink

While this works, it is not a valid test because your call never leaves the Vonage network. This is a Voip to Voip call and what you see is what another Vonage user would see. What we want to know is what a regular POTS or foreign Voip user would see. For that to test, your call has to leave the Vonage network.

I hate to say it, but this outbound CID "out of area" may deal a deal killer for me. When I get a call that says "out of area" I first think telemarketer.

I signed up for Vonage Small Business and I really want my business name to be displayed....If fact, I was told by Vonage, when I signed up that I could program it to say whatever I wanted....

Any chance of me calling Vonage and getting the Outbound CID name to work?
