i have had Vonage for several months now and beenvery happy with it, but lately i keep having problems. i can always hear the peson i am talking to but most of the time they keep telling me that i sound staticy or that i sound like i am in a tunnel and that they cant hear me.

the does not happen on every single call but about half the time. and i know 5 other people that have in my area who are also complaining of the same problems. it seems like it has only been for the past two weeks or so. on the Vonage site they say you only need like 90k up and down or something like that.

whenever i run a speed test on my roadrunner connection i get 2.8M - 5M down and 250K - 380K up.

that should be plenty of bandwith - what they heck is going on?

the thing i am afraid of too is that the problem doesnt happen every time so i am sure that it wont happen when i go to call Vonage and if it doesnt happen then, how are they supposed to troubleshoot it.

Have you tried www.testyourvoip.com yet? Also, I think there's a sticky post at the top of this forum that details all of the things you should post in order for people to help you out.

Also, if you haven't tried it already, try power cycling your equipment and re-powering in the correct order. That solves a lot of problems.

yeah i have tried that and sometimes it helps sometimes it doesnt - but the times that it helps it is only a temporary fix. the next phoen call we make, the problem is usually back.

i just ran it and it scored a 3.9 right now which seems reasonable but next time i have a problem i will tryto hang up and run the test again and see what happens.

and thanks for pointing out the sticky post - i didnt see that one.
1) location - albany, NY
2) Time Warner Roadrunner (Cable)
3) speeds are supposed to be 5M down and 384K up but generally are 2.5M-4.5M down and 200K-350K up.
4) modem make and model - not sure i will have to double check this when i get home
5) Vonage adapter - linksys WRTP54G
6) network setup - cable modem -> hub. hub to dlink wireless router and to linksys WRTP54G. i did this because i really dont liek the features of the linksys router so i put all my pcs on the dlink router and just run the phones off the linksys.
7) my issue is that when on a call, usually the other party complains that i sound quiet, staticy or like i am in a tunnel and that they cant hear me. i can hear them just fine.

I noticed your packet discard percentage was much higher then mine on your upload. I also noticed that as fast as your download speed is, which is actually faster then mine your upload is much slower. My upload is usualy aroun 890 kp.

Don't know if this helps, it's just an observation.

yeah roadrunner only offers 384K upload speeds to their RR residential customers and it actual upload speeds generally huver between 250K and 350K which should still be plenty for Vonage.

Have you tried eliminating the hub and just putting the Vonage adapter behind the Dlink? (I know, Vonage advises against it, but it's worth a try.)

You're right, the test results aren't too bad, but the uplink packet discard are just a little high. You might want to run a test with your computer plugged directly into the modem and see if that improves things. If it does, focus on the hub as a source of your problems.
