9 times out of 10 this is an indoor wiring issue and/or cheap phones. If you have this problem now and re-use this same bad wiring/phones, expect to hear La Musica de Mexico. That said, calling up the radio station would be a worthwhile thing to do. Most engineers are friendly and are willing to help you resolve any interference issues.

3. We have an alarm which calls out through phone lines to a monitoring station. How will this work using the Vonage system? How will they know our address to send police/fire to?

Well, it may or may not work, depending on the alarm system and Vonage adapter you receive. The RTP300 has been a solid performer with my data connections, so it stands a good chance of doing the same for your alarm system. If it's a newer alarm system, it'll probably report in DTMF (touch-tone) signals to the alarm monitoring co. Older systems used a very crude modem setup to communicate problems/status. As far as the address goes, this should be on file with your alarm company. They'll need to know the address AND phone # that the alarm panel's connected to.

4. Our Comcast cable modem seems to go up and down at a whim.

Um... and you want to hook up an alarm system to this?!? So, the alarm goes off, modem's not working...then what? For that matter, you want to run a business on this ?!? Get this fixed before even considering moving forward with Voip, especially with an alarm system. Unplug the modem from the wall (so their phone techs won't be able to tell you it's working fine), call up Comcast & tell them that it "doesn't work" and have them give you a new modem.

As far as Vonage reps not being able to answer these questions, I don't blame them. With the exception of #1, everything else here involves too many variables to give a definitive answer. Sorry, but that's the way the world works.

I wish I knew what the hell radio station it is. I dont speak spanish (but Im learning). Its kind of a nice supplement to the hold music with Comast.

I actually did have Comcast replace the cable modem, seems to be working ok now. I treid that testyourvoip.com site, got a 4.0.

I guess thing to do is try it, just plugging in the broadband phone router to ethernet cable, and using only 1 phone on Vonage. Wont be able to test alarms ability to call out, but whatever. Im not that worried about alarm issue. I'll buy a 12 gage.

Now, from what everyone is saying...there WILL NOT be interuption in our current home # as Vonage ports that number to their service (except for maybe a few hrs). Right?

If so, I'll give this thing a try, and kick ol' comast out of bed. Still got their internet and cable TV though, but this is a start!

Thanks much for helping.

If you're uncertain, get a new number with Vonage and port your old one over later after you've tested things out and you know it will work for you. That way, if it does not work out, you can just cancel the Vonage line and not worry about losing your number. If Vonage works out, it'll only cost you an extra $10.

I don don't think your question about porting has been clearly answered. During the time when you're porting the numner you will have to keep your old phone connected. DO NOT cancel your old account until the number is ported. During the transition, Vonage will work, but with a new (virtual) phone number. Then, one day, you'll come home to find your old phone dead, and you'll have to disconnect your phone wiring from the outside lines, and instead wire it up to the Vonage adaptor.

One point you may run into is that some people have reported problems with caller ID when connecting a large number of phones to a Vonage adaptor. If this happens to you (and it seems to be unlikely, but not impossible), you may have to spend some time figuring out which of your phones is causing the problem.

LOL
I don't need Comcast for that problem, Latin music is all I ever hear in my house due to being married to this lovely latina, hence the spacious office complete with cable TV, leather couch, frig and microwave. Yes, I spend a lot of hours there Smile
