Oh well - thanks for the replies, guys. I tried the IP for the site itself, but they must have this blocked, as I timed out x 4.
And I suspect Nate is right about their using different servers for the actual testing. Perhaps they'll respond to my email and clarify what might be going on.
On another front, one of my other concerns about a possible switch to Vonage is that monitoring for my current alarm system is landline-based. I realize I might be able to get this to work with Vonage, but no guarantee there (either from Vonage, or my Alarm Company). I've also realized that a reasonably adept thief could just go to the side of my house and cut the phone and/or cable line, and prevent notification. So I may switch to a cell phone-based system with my current Alarm company - a $200 install, and no change in the $10/month monitoring. I may do this regardless of whether I switch to Vonage.
Will repost if I learn anything further from TestYourVOIP or elsewhere.
Best,

Hi Dave,
Looks like we crossed posts. Excellent detective work! Here's my tracert results to the same server:

Looks like the path mine takes is a bit round-about: through Dallas? Latency seems much higher than yours.
Any thoughts on what this all means?

I'm not sure why it would go this way, but I know there is a major telecom trunk for the southeast U.S. that goes to Dallas. I think some more digging is required. |

Perhaps finding out the difference if say you took the IP from another site of testyourvoip.com and tracerting it to see if the Dallas hop is still there. Quite possibly could be a rouitng problem with your ISP, but I think if you tried it at say 2AM, it might be different, with networks loads and all. |

Well, this is of some academic, but probably not real-world interest. I mean, it's not like I'm going to get Adelphia to change their routing patterns And I actually got there in fewer hops, for whatever that's worth.
What about the apparently greater latency shown on my results, especially for the last half of the journey? I assume that's another thing of academic interest, with little option as far as changing that.
Don
P.S. When I do a View Source at the testyourvoip.com results page, I don't find any ip's or other information as you showed in your post (I'm using IE6). What are you doing differently? |

You have to do the view source while the test is running, but not in the Java window. On the latency, especially today, there are lots of people at home using their Internet, so it's very possible that the densely populated northeastern U.S. is slowing you down. I dunno, just a shot in the dark, but sometimes it really is that simple to explain. |

Yup, that did it. I can now see the destination IP address.
Well, I think I've pretty much done everything I can at my end of the connection. Will likely give Vonage a 30-day trial, and see what happens.
Thanks to all for the help here - a very useful forum!

Not a problem Don, good luck and let us know if it's good or otherwise. |
