OK, I completely missed the whole "results identical with or without router" point. My reading comprehension is apparently low. Mea culpa. Smile

Anyway, you are completely correct, on a 450-560K up connection, you should not see latency of any kind with a 64k application (like testyourvoip.com) or a 90k application (like Vonage).

Call Adelphia and ask them to do a line test.

Did they provide the modem? If so, you may want to ask if they can replace it to test out a different one.

I don't know if tuning the connection will really do you much good, since you have high latency even when you are barely using it. I suspect (unfortunately) that they probably have a problem somewhere else.

One possibility would be to do the testyourvoip.com test to another server (not Boston), to see if it is a testyourvoip problem, or a route problem between you and Boston. If it is, you may or may not experience the same problem with Vonage, since they are located not too terribly far away (New Jersey).

dslreports.com also has a "ping test" where they ping you and look for high-latency hops - sort of a reverse tracert. You may try that.

The more information you can gather when calling Adelphia, the better, as long as it doesn't interfere with "24" of course (not a fan of the show myself, but enjoy!).

No problem; it's been a long day!

What exactly does a "line test" consist of? Something they can do from where they are, or are we talking about a technician coming to my house?

They do provide the modem, so I don't think it would be difficult to go to their office in my town and get a replacement.

I tried Helsinki, Sydney, Montreal, and they all had similar results, with closer to 3.2 or 3.3 on the me-to-them side, with Packet Discards accounting for the majority of the problem.

Will do.

I didn't watch 24 at all until last spring when I borrowed DVD's from a friend. After a single episode, I was hooked - much like I imagine crack cocaine would be like!! We have since borrowed/rented DVD's from all prior seasons in order to catch up. One of the best things I've seen on TV in quite a while. YMMV Lol

I think they can at least do a basic test from their offices, but Adelpia is also pretty good about sending people out when necessary. Just call and explain the problem, with as much supporting evidence as possible, and let them deal with it. Hopefully they will be able to fix it.

Anyway, I think you've probably nailed it down as much as you're likely to be able to. You may be able to tune the connection, but frankly the router should be doing that for you, so I think Adelphia now owns the problem.

Good luck!!!

Commercial break, so have a minute:

In doing some basic testing at DSLReport, the only thing of possible significance is my RWIN is set to 334336, whereas they recommend RWIN value no higher than 100740.

Could this relate to the packet issue I'm having?

It could. That's a VERY high rwin. Mine shows as 65535, as set by my router. I don't know if that would affect latency outbound packets, though.

I changed mine to 70080 (based on the formula suggested at DSLReport), and my upload/download speed are basically the same.

When I check TestYourVOIP, the results are marginally better (3.7 to 3.9 including Boston, Sydney, Helsinki, etc.). But this is also a different time of day, and there was moderate variation before, so I'm not inclined to think this is really relevant.

I'll call Adelphia in the morning and see what I can find out.

Thanks for all the help - much appreciated!

Well, I spoke with Adelphia, and while they were cooperative, nothing was found.

They checked the modem, and found no issues at all.

They checked the basic connection - no packet loss, no problems there either.

They were unable to run their own checks at TestYourVOIP since it required a Java applet to run.

So basically they said that my connection is "up to snuff," using all their standard diagnostic tools, and there's nothing that needs to be fixed.

(They did indicate they started blocking icmp (correct term?) a couple of years ago when some viruses were attacking there, and that would explain the timing out when tracert goes through the modem.)

They suggested finding out, if possible, the IP address of the server TestYourVOIP is using, and Pinging it directly, to see if that might uncover any issues. I have emailed them, but am not sure they will disclose this information.

Any other suggestions on how to improve my uplink performance with TestYourVOIP, in terms of the Packet Discards, would be appreciated. I'll probably go ahead and do the 30-day trial, and see what the "real-world" performance actually is.

True, that's the IP address for the website. But I suspect their SIP testing machines, which are located all around the world, have different IP addresses.

However, using NETSTAT and a network monitor, I was unable to see it. Dunno what I'm doing wrong.

When I did a test call to Boston, I did a quick "View Source" on the page. Here's what I think is relevant:
