Cable modem status pages vary, and your ISP can shut them off at will. The standard I've seen, and the one that my Linksys BEFCMU10 modem users, is http://192.168.100.1 (sorry for the earlier typo).

If you are doing a test and you are SURE that nothing else is trying to saturate your upstream bandwidthm and it still gives poor results, I'd call your ISP tomorrow and see if they can do a line test.

Thanks, Nate. 192.168.100.1 got me into the Cable-Modem.

Here is the Signal Info:

Downstream Value
Frequency 573000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Power Level 8 dB The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 7
Frequency 23000000 Hz Ranged

That's all there is - nothing about speeds.

How do you explain this:

I can Ping 192.168.100.1 without problem, with latency of 1ms.
Using Tracert, it seems to choke on the first ping after my router

Thanks again for all your help. Hopefully we can clarify this. Tech Support for my ISP is 24/7, so once I know what to ask them, I can give them a call even today. But I'd rather have a better grasp of where the problem is before I call.

Don

Signal to Noise ratio looks good.

Power readings are nothing like mine, and the 57 dBmV looks a little high to me.

But, it is possible that your ISP has just made your first hop un-pingable.

Can you plug your computer directly into the modem and try a test that way? Does your ISP have problems with changing MAC addresses (mine allows changes, I just have to restart the modem when I make a change).

I wonder if it's something along these lines. I can ping it directly, but it times out completely through tracert. But if the problem were really this severe, I think we'd be seeing more than just a somewhat elevated Packet Discards.

I can probably try this as well, but I'm not sure if it's going to tell us anything further. I'll probably end up just calling Adelphia and see if they can help track it down.

The "information" IP address that the modem uses for its HTTP display and the "routing" IP address in the modem are completely different things, so I think it's probably either a configuration of the modem, or you have your router's firewall set too tight.

Hence why I want you to test without the router, if at all possible. Smile

OK, Nate - I connected the Computer directly to the Cable-Modem, and Pinged as before, without problem. I then traced the tracert, and this time the delay was still present, although as the first hope, as expected. Here is the results, before it started timing out at the back-end:

No probem.

Those results look good. Now, with the router still bypassed, run the testyourvoip.com test and post results.

I had done that as the first step, way back at the beginning of this thread, and saw no difference, but just to play it safe, I reconnected directly to the Cable-Modem, and found these results:

1.9% discards and a 3.8 score is pretty good. Sorry, I must have missed your testyourvoip score "sans router" earlier, all I see is the "with the router" result of 2.9% and 3.5

Still, your connection should be able to do better. Adelphia's a good provider - at least I had really good results with them when I was in Kentucky. I'd call Adelphia and tell them you are seeing some latency on Voice Over IP and request a line test.

Also, have them check your modem for the latest firmware. It should be loaded automatically, but just in case...

You can also go to www.dslreports.com and look at some of the testing tools - there is one for tuning your connection to make sure you get the most out of it.

Also, one more thing. Hook up the router, with just the one computer hooked up to it, QOS off, and wireless off, and run the test again. That way, we can compare router/no-router done at about the same time. I want to see if the router is part of your problem, though we seem to have proven that it is not ALL of your problem at least.

During the day, with multiple tests, it has varied between 3.3 and 3.8, with no difference with/without the router in the loop. And you make my point precisely - with a connection where I consistently have 450-560 kbps up and 4000-4800 kbps down, I would think I should have near-perfect results.

I'll play around with that next. That is, until 8:00 pm, when the new season of 24 starts!! Wink Wink

Will try this later. I checked the router settings earlier today, when QoS was brought up, and found that it is currently disabled. But as you say, since I'm seeing identical performance on all tests we've run with the router in or out of the loop, it's hard to imagine that it is playing a role.

Will report back later after running some tests at DSLReports, etc.

Thanks!! Very Happy
