Well, I searched through 7 pages of topics on this forum, so if there is already a post, don't take a fit....here it is again.

I'm experiencing strange things with incoming calls. Either the phone will ring twice, stop ringing, then start ringing again & I can answer.....or.....phone rings twice & caller is sent directly to voice mail.

Originally, I thought it was because I was using low quality 2.4 cordless phones, but this past weekend I bought a dual handset digital 5.8 & have the same problem.

My setup is very basic. Motorola SB5100 to RT31P2. Router directly to PC. I do have the entire house wired for phone, using two dual handset systems (2 lines used - 4 handsets total)

I'm not sure where to start looking. Would this be an ISP issue? A Vonage setting issue?

Any & all advice is appreciated.

It certainly could be an ISP issue, but it could be other things as well. Start by posting the information listed here. It would also be a good idea if you can replace your cordless phones with one simple corded phone for test purposes, to be sure that you're not having some kind of phone problem.

Along with Steve's advice, I'd recommend disconnecting from the house wiring for testing to isolate the problem between the adapter and the wiring.

Your packet losses and discards are very high. Try plugging your computer directly into your modem (eliminating the Vonage router) and repeating the test. If the results aren't substantially better, then it's a sure bet that you have an ISP issue. (Bear in mind that I consider your modem and the cable coming into your house to be part of your ISP's network.)

The results from www.testyourvoip.com are more for troubleshooting call quality issues. As long as there's a connection the calls shouldn't be ringing twice and going to voicemail or ringing, stopping, and then ringing again. I would suggest disabling voicemail for a while and then enabling it again later. Maybe do some test calls while voicemail is disabled to see what happens with the incoming calls.

Okay, I tried a few things. Disconnected house wiring & connected cordless directly to adapter....same problem. 1 or 2 rings, then right to voice mail. Then hooked up a corded phone....almost the same problem. On the corded phone connected directly to the adapter, the phone would attempt to ring everytime, but would only be intermittent portions of a ring. As if it was cutting in & out during the ring tone. I've disabled voicemail & doesn't seem to make any difference.

I agree with Blakaher, in that the voice quality during a phone call is quite good. I don't have any dropped calls, or choppy audio. The calls are actually better now with the 5.8 phones. I am getting my up/down speed, testing from pcpitstop.com.

What do you guys think? Could my adapter be on the blink? Are there any settings that can be adjusted for strength of ringing signal? (like I know what I'm talking about) Any & all advice is appreciated.

Your adapter could be on the blink, but I repeat the advice to try plugging your computer directly into your modem and repeat the Voip test. If you don't get substantial improvement in dropped packets, then you should have a discussion with your ISP about it. If you do get a big improvement, and the test results degrade again when you put the Vonage adapter back in, then a call to Vonage support is in order.

Of course, Vonage support is always available to you and can help you diagnose a bad adapter. Just try to have as much data as you can to pass on when you call them.
