PostPosted: Fri Jan 13, 2006 10:49 pm    Post subject: RTP300 & having to restet the router? Reply with quote Back to top

Hi Everyone. Ive had Vonage for about 3 weeks now. I really like the service and the sound is crystal clear just like a land line phone. There is one gotcha im having lots of problems with the RTP300 router. I have common and i mean common network interuptions. I will get home and either i won't be able to connect to the internet with the pc's connect to it. A quick check using ipconifg /all shows everything is just fine. All address are as they should be including dns address. I reboot the pc and that doesn't help either. I have to unplug the router and plug it back in then everything is just fine. Firmware version is 1.00.58. I have SBC DSL and have had this service for about 2 years before i got Vonage. I had and old linksys router befsr11. I never had problems before. My service never went down. Oh i forgot to mention sometimes when i have these network outages my phone goes dead to. Sometimes it doesn't. At first i thought it was the dns proxy setting in the router but i shut this off and things never improved. I just have the router set up to automatically obtain ip because my dsl modem does the ppoe part. THis is exactly how i had it set up with my old setup to. Is there a new firmware version for this router i can try or do you think i just need to call Vonage and get it replaced?

thanks,
ncage

Do you use BitTorrent, eMule, or any other connection-intense or Peer-to-Peer software?

Yes i use azerueus which is a bittorent client. I never had problem with my older equipment. I did notice that i didn't have port 6881 open which the recommend opening. Do you think the software might have kept hitting port 6881 and crashed the router? Anyways i have opened up port 6881 and im going to see what happens.

Unfortunately, I suspect you are running into a bug found in most Linksys routers that most BitTorrent users run into eventually.

I had to put a WRT54G in front of my WRTP54G (which is the same as your RTP300 except the WRTP54G has wireless).

Take some of the savings with Vonage, and put a WRTP54GL or WRTP54GS, loaded up with HyperWRT aftermarket firmware, and get the stability you need and real QoS.

Sorry, no way to break it to you gently on that one. I spent months looking for a solution, and gave up and just upgraded my router. I'm a lot happier now!

I had similar problems with mine. Though there were reported cable service outages in my area, and I originally thought that to be the problem, turned out to be something kludged in the RTP300. I'm involved in an opensource project and we often use BitTorrent to distribute some of our work. It's very likely that was the cause for me as well, because my router was out cold. A power-cycle got it acting normal again.

Try disabling your wireless routers firewall and the DMZ.

Slight modification to my recommendation re: WRT54GS and GL:

The WRT54GS V4, which could accept third party firmware, has been replaced with the WRT54GS V5 units. The new V5 units share the VXWORKS operating system with the WRT54G V5 units.

If you go shopping for a WRT54GS, buy it locally so you can look at the serial number, and avoid serial numbers starting in "CGN7".

So, the only Linksys router I'm recommending if you want the best experience possible is the WRT54GL. In my opinion, the VXWORKS units are too new and unproven, and the WRT54G already has a roadmap of problems.
