PostPosted: Thu Jan 12, 2006 12:59 pm    Post subject: 14.99 plan - 500 out minutes - local counted? Reply with quote Back to top

I have a suspicion this question has been answered, but I searched 4 different ways and couldn't find the answer. So here goes.

So here goes: I'm interested in going with Vonage .. Question on the $14.99/month plan. It says you get "500 outgoing minutes a month anytime to anywhere in the US"

Are local calls counted in against those 500, i.e. calling my neighbor for 10 minutes would be subtracted from 500, or just true long distance type calls?

I ask because we only do an average of ~200 long distance minutes/month right now. No idea how many local. So it seems to make sense to go with the $15/mo plan if those 500 are all LDX.

TIA

It's 500 outgoing total, it doesn't matter if you're calling locally or long distance (essentially they are the same with Vonage). Outbound toll free calls do not count against your 500 minutes, though.

500 outgoing minutes a month anytime to anywhere in the US (including Puerto Rico) & Canada

Sounds like local and long distance minutes to me. Thats why I chose the $24.99 plan instead.

everyone should audit their use as I bet there is a huge amount of people who rarely go over 500 minutes (much less the ~800 minutes it would take to bring the 500 minute plan up to cost with the unlimited plan)
as far as Vonage is concered, there is no local or long distance.

Remember 800 number calls and calls to other Vonage users do not count either. I have never had a month where I even came close to using the 500 minutes. I use to worry about it, but now I rarely check on what I have left.

When I signed up I thought it was 500 minutes, period. Like a cell phone. I was very pleased to see that incoming calls wern't charged, toll free numbers wern't charged.

Also if you happen to call someone else who has Vonage there is no charge. Smile

In my case I wanted Voip to replace a land line that we almost never use but feel that we need to have. Almost all of our calls before Voip were made using the cell phones. We were paying $39 a month to Verizon for a phone that we never made any outgoing calls on. Switching to Vonage for $16.94 a month was an easy decision.

Now that we have a land line that does not cost extra for long distance calls we actually use the phone. My 20 month old son loves to talk to his grandparents. He always had a hard time with the cell phone (even on speaker). He loves the old AT&T analog desk phone that he uses now... he has almost figured out how to speed dial "papa".

I was also not sure about if incoming minutes were counted or not when I was first looking at Vonage. I made sure before I signed up. I also chose the 500 minute plan. I figure that is more than enough got me. If I go over I will have to use an extra 256 minutes (at 3.9 cents/min) before I am paying $25 total. If that happens more than a few times I will change my plan.

As one poster said above, you need to use 800 minutes or more a month before the unlimited package is cheaper than the limited package.

Also, since incoming calls are free, you can make a one-minute call to a friend and have him call you back for 3 hours. 181 minutes on the phone for only 1 minute off your tally.

If he happens to have Vonage, no worries - inter-Vonage minutes are always free.

If your friend happens to have Vonage, all your calls to him are free as welll, no need to have your friend call you back as your calls to him are "in-network" and don't count toward your 500 minutes.

Also having toll-free numbers not count is great! How long have you been on hold to your friendly call center lately?
