I have comcast outside philly as so far ok.
Ironicly though I've been getting calls from Comcast recently asking me if I want to switch to their phone service which they say is "comparable to VoIP". They charge around 35 dollars a month. I told the guy I pay 25 dollars now, and he said since I'm a comcast user, I could have the service for 27 dollars a month for the first year. So I asked him if they would also cover my termination fee from vonage...he said no.
He tried to emphasis that if the network went down I wouldn't be able to use vonage...but still be able to use their phone service. I asked how this was possible without a network, he repeated that the phone service was "comparable to
Voip
" and didn't need a network to work. So I'm assuming their hoping on their cable network somehow....but if the power went down - nothing would work either way. I told him if the network went down, I'd have to call comcast to complain, and it would probably favor them if I couldn't get to my phone. Then I also reminded him I have a cell phone.
Anyone else getting calls from Comcast for this service?

I got two calls yesterday from them, the first one in the morning, I told the lady, nope, not interested. The second one later that afternoon, (From the same number/call center), I laid into them and said I was already contacted, and do you keep track of WHO you call? That poor guy.....

I did not know that there is an early termination fee for canceling
Vonage
, and I do not remember signing any thing saying this. Do not miss-understand me, I love my
Vonage
and I am not planning to cancel my service, since it is my only connection to the states from Qatar
; however, I do want to know what my liabilities are
. Does any one knows where can find this information
.
Thanks

the terms of service you or the person who signed you up read and agreed to says:
You will be charged a termination fee of $39.99 per voice line if your Service is terminated for any reason after the Money Back Guarantee period and within the first year following the activation of your Service.

I think he meant to say if the power went out. The cable companies' phone adapters typically include an integrated cable modem and battery backup. Of course most people I know are using cordless phones that don't work when the power goes out anyway. I have a UPS connected to my cable modem and my adapter so that I can continue to use my phone and Internet connection (via my laptop) if the power goes out. I also keep a corded phone in my office.
The cable companies typically use a separate channel to carry their
Voip
traffic and often terminate the calls locally. This means that they may be able to offer E911 features in some markets that
Vonage
is currently denied access. However it also means that they typically lack features like virtual numbers, the ability to travel with your adapter and the ability to use an out of area phone number. Additionally they are typically regulated telecommunication providers so the taxes you pay for their service are higher than
Vonage
.
I did not intend this post to turn into a comparison of the two services, but I think it is important for cable company customers to know that the services aren't the same at all. There are a lot of tradeoffs besides simply price.
I received a direct mail promotion for Comcast Digital Voice two days ago. Additionally when my house was being wired for cable two years ago the Comcast installer tried to sell it to me.

I am happy to see that many people read the Terms of Service Agreement
, and I am sad to say that I do not belong to this group. However, I will start from know on to at least to glance at it and look at termination and cancellation procedures and fees. Thanks for maryjane and reebok for their quick response
.

Just out of curiosity, how would Comcast know that you are using bandwidth for
Voip
and not some other purpose?

By the ports used.
For example, many ISP's block port 80 to prevent you from running a web server.
