PostPosted: Wed Mar 17, 2004 10:04 am    Post subject: Faulty VT1000? Reply with quote Back to top

Last week, one of my two lines went dead. After an hour with tech support, they diagnosed the problem as a bad port on the VT1000, killed both lines, and sent me a new VT1000. The new VT1000 would not boot (the green light blinks once, pauses, blinks again, etc.) After another two hours with tech support, they diagnosed the problem as a faulty VT1000 and sent me a third VT1000. The third one would also not boot, acting exactly as the second one did.

My configuration is cable modem (Earthlink using Time Warner cable), VT1000, computer. Nothing has changed in the configuration between the time I had the VT1000 with the bad port and now. There is no standalone router. Tech support says that the VT1000 communicates with their server, but times out before getting an IP address. However, not only don't I have phone service, but I also can't get internet access through the VT1000, although I can get it by bypassing it.

The only strange thing that has happened (in addition to not having any telephone service for over a week) is that the email that I got from Vonage giving me shipping details about the second replacement VT1000 came from "Earthlink Unlimited Voice," a new Vonage service offered through Earthlink. However, even though I use Earthlink as my ISP, my Vonage service is directly with Vonage and has been since last November, well before the Earthlink Unlimited Voice service was offered. Could it be that the replacement VT1000's aren't bad at all, but that the new Vonage/Earthlink marriage somehow assumes that I am really a Earthlink Unlimited Voice customer and denies me access to traditional Vonage?

BTW the first VT1000 (the one with the defective port) boots properly and gets an IP address (even though I can't get a dial tone using it because that has been disabled by Vonage).

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I can't think that you would miss this, but just for "easy solutions" not to overlook - Does your cable modem expect its client to have a particular MAC address?

To troubleshoot this, you can hook up the "working" vt1000 (the one that boots) and see what mac address it's set to, then set the mac address on the "new" vt1000 to that same mac address.

Peace,

Joe

There is a post on dslreports about the blinking lights I saw on 3/15, dslreports is currently down but I think the one blinking light was a boot problem. if you have been through 3 MTAs than I would start looking at my setup.

Here is the light thing

1 blink: boot mode/ROM
2 blinks: unable to obtain an ip address (from router or modem)
3 blinks: problem with configuration on device
4 blinks: trying to register with our network
steady: ready to call

Heres a link to the vt100xv manual, it won't tell you the light codes, as it looks Vonage is writing there own firmware, but it will show you alternate setups for the MTA, for those of you that have asked.
