PostPosted: Wed Jan 11, 2006 5:55 pm    Post subject: WIFI Phone UTSTARCOM phone service Reply with quote Back to top

I signed up for new Vonage service recently and after ordering realized I wanted the UTSTARCOM phone also. After calling Vonage about adding it they individual said that I needed to have the phone to get the service. Of course I ordered the phone from a Voip supply company and planned to add the service with Vonage. I called Vonage and they said I couldn't do that and it must come from Vonage, and I told them they were the one's that told me this was the action I needed to take. What do I do now? I am a little pissed since Vonage was the one's who told me this. Please advise.

you can either get it from them on a new line or buy a softphone (on top of your current line) and manually enter the settings.

I haven't recieved my phone router yet but I can go ahead and get a softphone for my computer and then do it myself? Is there a guide out there that tells how to do this?

Quick Question:

If I purchased an unlocked UT Starcom, and added the softphone service. Does the UT Starcom have its own number?

I wanted to use my main number because I travel around 3 states and work from Hotels with WIFI spots

So is it possiable to use a UT Starcom with softphone serivce and keep my main Vonage phone number?

AJA -

There's everything you could want to know about SoftPhone. But, yes, the SoftPhone is a separate line, with its own assigned telephone number.

Ok Thanks,

I travel alot from NC to SC to GA. I want to be able to take my Voip phone with me, and use in Hotels and Trade shows that have wireless internet. Back at home I like having the phone adaptor that incorporates speakerphone and 5.8 ghz handsets for conference calls. If I get a softphone with a separate number, could I just forward my main line to the softphone whenever I travel? Would that work?

What are my options?
Thanks Again

You should be able to do what you want using simultaneous ring on your main line. The soft phone would ring on all calls - if it is connected - via wifi, pc softphone, or any other method.

Another option which some people here seem to use is to connect a laptop to the Wireless connection, then get a standard Vonage adapter and use "Internet Connection Sharing" to turn their laptop into an Internet gateway for the Vonage device.

(WiFi) ->> (Wireless)Laptop(RJ45) --> (WAN Port)Vonage(RJ11) -> Telephone

Of course, this means you have to carry a laptop and your Vonage adapter (and a regular telephone, if you don't get one of the Vonage all-in-one units).

The softphone line, though, does not have unlimited minutes. Keep that in mind.

If you need an inbound line only with unlimited minutes, you can always use any regular Voip provider, get a phone number from www.ipkall.com that can forward to your Voip, and set that number up in Vonage as a forwarding number or SimulRing. That would be a free way to get inbound calls while at your conventions and hotels.
