It was posted earlier in this thread: WRT54G Version Number
I agree that having the ability to use third-party firmware is beneficial. I haven't had a V5 so I can't say it's any better or worse, but I have been using a V1 with and without third-party firmware.
While using the stock Linksys firmware I had to reboot my router at least once a week. Eventually I had to reboot it every other day. A lot of it had to deal with my downloads, but what good is a router if I can't download.
After installing Hyper-WRT+tofu as firmware I haven't had to reboot my router since. It's been five months.
For QoS I use Device Priority by MAC Address. I have five computers on my network, plus the Vonage adapter, and there hasn't been any problems. |

I too was frustrated from being stuck with the v5 router and it's constant reboots and errors, until I found out the proprietary firmware was finally hacked by brainslayer on the DD-WRT team. If you're not familiar with DD-WRT, it's a version of GPL Linux-based firmware that's been used for years to replace the proprietary firmware on various versions of WRT54G (and MUCH more stable than the Linksys firmware). Check out this Wiki for more info on flashing your v5 router to the micro version of DD-WRT.

As others have pointed out V5 is a horrible router.
V4 is now being sold as the WRT54GL <-- L = Linux
It's 56.99 at CanadaComputers.com. TigerDirect carries it too. |
