I have home phone with Vonage (PAP2 adapter), and I am going for a vacation to another country. Can I download and use Softphone instead of taking my phone adapter with me while I am away without $10 subscription for softphone ? I am taking my laptop with me anyway. And noone is going to use my Vonage adapter while I am away.

You need a softphone account. The main account is tied to the modem.
There is no hardware or cancellation fee; when you come home, just cut off the softphone to stop the charges.

So I'll be end up paying extra $10 during my vacation, even if my main line will not be used. It's not quite fare.
If you want to use the Softphone, I assume you'll have access to the internet? Just take your adapter and a handset with you. No need to route the calls through your laptop. If you want to receive your home calls you'll be able to as well.
