I know I am joining this party late, but when I read about this thread in the digest I immediately thought that enclosing the adapter in a transparent watertight container and submerging it in an aquarium would be the correct answer.
Normally I would put together the parts list for this project, but I am on the road and don't have Google access. In addition to accounting for the cabling I think you might have to be concerned with temperature, especially in a tropical aquarium.
I leave the choice of fish up to you, but neon tetras might be appropriate. Please post pictures once you have this completed.

try a scrap of window tint - apply then trim with an exacto knife
