There wasn't a good phone jack near my router so I ran a phone cord to my Network Interface. I disconnected the plug from the telco jack and used an adapter to hook it to my phone cord which was hooked to my Vonage router.
This didn't work. Why?

Your setup looks good, so it's not clear why it doesn't work. You could have a bad cord or a bad adapter. To check, take a phone outside, pull the telco plug from the adapter, and plug the phone into the adapter. Do you get a dial tone?
When you say that the setup didn't work, did the phone light on the Vonage box stay lit? Did you plug into the correct phone port on the Vonage box? If you put a Y splitter at the Vonage box and plug in both a phone and your long cord (which is hooked to the house wiring at the other end), does the phone work? |

Well since I posted I took the cord and ran it through a window and plugged into a phone jack. At first i go a dial tone and the after a bit it didn't work.
Then I cut the cord and wired it into my NI box and then called the number from my cell phone and that worked fine and then a bit later it stopped working.
Leads me to believe that I messed up the cord along the way and have a short. Can't find that Y adapter that was laying around here somewhere so can't do the other test.
I'm having a static problem on my home wiring that I think I've traced down to one wall jack but rewiring it and cleaning the contacts only worked temporarily.
I'm really tring to get this straightened out since my telco account disconnected today.
Do you know how long it takes vonage to change your number over after that?
Hours of fun.
Thanks for the imput.

It sounds like you're doing the right things to track your problems down.
I don't know about the transfer in general. In my case the transfer was complete within hours of Southern Bell terminating the regular service. |
