The answer to your question is yes, but please do not interpret that as an invitation to go "click happy".

Dan,

I am noticing today a real speed difference between the forums and the ads. This causes a problem in Firefox because the rendering stops while waiting for an ad embedded in the posts to load.

The result is that if I am trying to jump to the bottom of a page I have to wait for the ads to fill in even though your site is fast enough to load the page right away.

I am not complaining so much as bringing it to your attention so that you can keep an eye on it.

Thanks

Thank you,

I will keep an eye on it. If it continues to be an issue, i will simply remove the ads.

If you have Firefox, why aren't you using Adblock?

Adblock is not working for me. I just installed it and I still see the ads on this site. Not that that is a bad thing, the ads are computer related, mostly and aren't intrusive at all.

Wow, ok this gets a little off topic but here goes....

I feel OK skipping ads on network TV because the television companies have been given free use of our airwaves and are broadcasting the material in the clear. In addition the ads are intrusive because programming isn't available while the ad is being displayed.

I feel quasi-OK about skipping ads on non-network TV (sorry Jon Stewart) because I am already paying a premium for watching the channel via my cable or satellite bill. I also feel that most programming could easily come up with alternative forms of revenue (for example product placement). The problem with ads being intrusive also plays a role.

I go to the movies early to watch the ads because I feel that they still put some care into how they are presenting things. If I had a high definition TV I might actually watch ads that were produced in high def. I do watch ads on TV that catch my attention in some way.

I feel that web sites, especially ones like this that support community content, deserve my support by counting my impressions. In addition I don't feel the ads are intrusive, for example I do block pop-up ads as I feel they violate the law in that they are unauthorized use of my computer. I tend not to re-visit sites that use heavy handed CSS techniques to force their ads down my throat.

So, I don't use Adblock because I find it unnecessary to block most ads. If this site, or another I frequented, were to not take my complaints about intrusive ads seriously I would stop visiting the site rather than make use of the resources without participating in revenue generation for the site.

Basically, if everyone used an ad blocker then there would be no free sites like this to go to, everyone would have to move to a subscription model or a sponsored model. So, if the ads don't bother me, why block them?

I am not certain whether this description, or even my personal beliefs are internally consistant on this issue. I have always been a little concerned over the concept of skipping ads on cable TV, but it is the best I can do at this point.

I just realized that perhaps you weren't asking for an explanation but offering a possible solution, oh well. Wink

It does. You have to right click on an ad and select "Adblock". You can also block ads from an entire domain using a wildcard (*).

I've browsed too many sites that use annoying animated ads (PUNCH THE DONKEY AND WIN $1,000,000!!!!) or blinking ads (YOU HAVE AN URGENT MESSAGE WAITING!!!!) or multimedia ads that play music or sound to go without a tool such as Adblock. I'm not going to get into a philosophical debate over the rights and wrongs of blocking ads, but if it's causing a page loading issue then I was offering a solution that wouldn't require Dan to eliminate all ads for everyone. So in your example it would be the lesser of two evils. /shrug
