For reference, I offer this link from Voange's press relese section, Dec 7th, 2004

Vonage offers Service in KC

I admit I have a somewhat unique situation. I need a number in both Des Moines (no problems obtaining this) and Kansas City (utterly impossible.)

In signing up this morning with a CSR, they told me that both the des moines and KC numbers were available. After completing my call and logging into my account, I discovered the Des Moines number was setup, but no virtual number for KC existed.

After 3 calls to Customer service and Sales, I've been told that the website is wrong, and that no KC numbers are available AT ALL.. Is this true? If so, when will 816 area code numbers for KC be available?

The end result was my cancelling of the order. While I would really like to use the Vonage service, without both area codes available to me it seems like a lost cause.

Anyone offer any advice or suggestions? Or has anyone actually gotten an 816 number from Vonage? Thanks in advance.

Time to start emailing some of those press contacts listed along the right-hand side and see what the scoop is. There's obviously some disconnect between marketing and the tech department if the 816 area code has been available for Vonage for over a year and yet they can't give you an 816 number.

High-speed Internet subscribers residing and working along the Missouri and Kansas state lines can now take advantage of Vonage’s broadband phone service offering free unlimited local and long distance calling

this is a portion of the press release. it states along the state lines - I'm taking this as meaning the entire states are not set up yet just along the state lines, could this be the confusion?

Maryjane,

Doubtful. Kansas City actually lies on the state line, with part of the city itself present in each state. The press release also gives a great blurb regrading the city,

“Residents and small businesses in the city known for its great steaks, jazz and the Yellow Brick Road, can now add Vonage’s local service offering to its notoriety,” said Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman & CEO of Vonage Holdings Corp. “Vonage is filling a need in the Kansas City market for affordable calling plans bundled with features they cannot get from their current local carrier.”

So I'm still not sure what's up.. If this release had been from december of '05 I could maybe understand.. But this from '04...

Hopefully a rep with Vonage will check in and let us know what's going on. Until then, I'm just a wannabe user...

Someone at Vonage is pulling your leg.

I have a Kansas City (816) number and have been on Vonage about 2 weeks.

I am starting to wonder if there are limited numbers allocated to the Voip services or something. Im sure not an expert, but I recently also signed up for service with Sunrocket which includes a second inbound number. I tried to get a 316 number as my second number and was informed online that there were none available. I later went to the sign up process just to check and 316 numbers were available for the primary and there were plenty to pick from.

The Kansas City Star, which is a local Missouri paper, recently ran an article about the fact that Vonage was available and my 816 number is still working (last time I checked).

I never thought I would have to hire an agent to get the straight scoop on these Voip services, but I do know it can flat wear ya out. *laughs

RLA,

Thanks for your response. Could you tell me if you ported a number to Vonage, or if you were assigned a new one? Also, did you go through customer service, or did you sign up online? Thanks for your help!

Jaisonm

I originally was set up to port my number over and if you don't read a lot it sounds like an easy process. After I ordered the service I discovered that porting your old number over isn't so seamless. You have to file a Letter of Authorization and wait until the old phone company gets around to making the change. Vonage states that it can take around 20 days if everything goes smooth.. It appears that most folks are waiting at least two weeks for this to happen. If that doesn't bug you then great.

I tend to be frugal so after waiting over 10 days to get my stuff from Vonage (which was initially included in my trial period) and then looking at potentially paying ma bell for another 20 days of service I just decided to call Vonage and see if I could cancel transferring the old number to my Vonage account. Vonage handled it like a pro and inside of a few hours they had my new number working both inbound and outbound and also issued credit against the 10 day wait.

I researched online before going with Vonage and then contacted customer service to order the Vonage service.

I also use another Voip service which so far seems better than Vonage. It has more features including an additional phone number, free phones, faxing that works like a champ and using the service for home office calls is perfectly fine. It is also cheaper. I have heard it is against the forum rules to link to them so if you want to talk on yahoo before you spend your money feel free to contact me at rla64052.
