Here's the situation:
The Vonage site indicated "NO" that my current local number (Alltel wireline) cannot be ported. However, if you go to any number of other carrier sites (like Verizon, Sprint), my local number shows that it can be ported to their wireless service. In addition, the Vonage site says "YES" if I plug in my local cell number (which is on Verizon).
So I went ahead and faxed paperwork to Vonage to see what would happen. Naturally, they responded and said no.
Question is:
Should I push the issue with Vonage? Based on the info I'm seeing, I could port my number to Verizon Wireless (to a no contract plan) and then turn around and port it to Vonage.
Alltel Wireline -> Vonage = NO PORT Verizon Wireless -> Vonage = YES PORT Alltel Wireline -> Verizon Wireless = YES PORT
So based on the above:
Alltel Wireline -> Verizon Wireless -> Vonage = ????? PORT |

Vonage website said that can transfer the existing phone number. Before open the Vonage account, I talk to a rep from Vonage (after a long wait). Asked the lady: "You don't see any problem transferring the existing ALLTEL wired number to Vonage?" - answer - "No problem". In this case I open the account, got my "Virtual Phone Number" and fill up the LNP and faxed it the next day I open the account. One working day later I received this letter:
Dear Customer,
Vonage is not a traditional phone company and has partners that we work with to facilitate the number transfers. Our partner in transferring your number is Focal Communications. At this time we cannot transfer your number to Vonage because your phone company AllTel does not have an interconnection agreement in place with Focal.
If you wish to pursue this issue, we suggest you file a complaint with the local PUC (public utility commission) and have AllTel get an agreement in place to transfer numbers.
Please advise us on how you wish to proceed.
NO S@#%!!! What advice should I give you?
DON"T PROMISE SOMETHING YOU CAN NOT DELIVER!!!
Lot's a people make there decision based on "Possibility to transfer the existing phone number" and if Vonage says yes they can keep my existing number..I'm saying...Let's open and account for me.
What should I Do? Change phone number? 1. Call all my friends let them know what my new phone #is 2. Call the 2 schools for my kids and fill up all the paper work with the change of phone number. 3. Update the records reflecting the phone change to" - credit card - work place - any institutions I'm affiliated and all the Telemarketing companies too
Or just cancel the Vonage account get back to my normal life and everything will be the way it was before. I can say that by switching to Vonage I can save about 10$-20$/mo but for that I have to do a lot of work.
Big dilemma......
IS IT WORTH IT????? |

isn't this totally up to you? I swear 1984 seems so real sometimes. it's like people want it. so figure it out for yourself. is saving that amount of money over X years you have your phone worth the inconvenience to you now? if not, go back. you have 14 days to evaluate your service. my suggestion is to use it as much as possible, see how you like it, and if it's good and the savings are worth it to you, stick around. if it's all just too much to handle, go back. |
