I read somewhere Skype will be usable on your cellphone in Europe. Why doesn't Vonage do this? Maybe this will sort of be available when dual mode cell phones come out that have built in wifi. But finding a hot spot is a bit hit and miss.

Dual mode (WiFi/Mobile) handsets will be technically capable of running a SIP client that can be used with the Vonage service, additionally Vonage intends to move towards dual mode mobile/WiFi phones as the successors to the F1000.

For an example of an announced phone see this very old Gizmado story. Read more about this phone at Motorola's page.

Additionally there may be an attempt to create smart phone clients (SIP or Skype) that use the mobile providers data network. However it is likely that, should they become popular, the mobile providers will block the ports necessary to make this work. Mobile providers have been very good at restricting use on their data networks when it competes with a paid service they are offering.

I have been hearing that promise from Vonage and others about the new Cell/Wifi phones now for more than a year. I did not see any new announcements out of CES in Las Vega last week so I doubt we will see any such phones on the shelves this year again. I was able to find one such phone in Asia paid $350 for it but it does not work very well. So even when these phones come out they will not be cheap.

I found a much better solution! The device I now use (FX-300 GSM) both forwards my Vonage calls to my GSM (Cingualr, AT&T, T-Mobile) cell Phone for free and I can now place (route) my outbound cell call through my Vonage service anytime anywhere I have cell coverage. My additional monthly fee is $10/mo for the extra number on my Cingular family plan. I installed this extra Chip in the FX-300 and connect the FX-300 to the Linksys Phone port. I plug my cordless phone into the FX-300 so I can still use the Vonage service at home in the normal manner. I programmed the device so it will automatically forward my Vonage calls to my cell phone if no one at home answers within 5 rings. So all missed Vonaqe calls reach me on my cell phone or go to my cell voice mail.

To make my Vonage calls from my cell I first call the phone number of the new Cingular chip in the device and then after I hear my Vonage dial tone and dial the number of the person I want to call. This was a bit of a hassel but I figured out how to insert a pause in my phonebook entries on my Samsung phone so now this dialing is automatic as well. So most of my Cell phonebook entries now look like this x-xxx-xxx-xxxxPx-xxx-xxx-xxxx

I figure this solution is as good as it is going to get for sometime and I should recoup my investment in this device in about 3-4 months from savings on my cell phone bill.
