I have started having an extremely annoying with my Vonage line. If I call a busy number using my Vonage phone, the number will ring for about four to five times and then I will suddenly hear a busy signal. This is annoying because although I hear a ringing sound, the number I am calling is actually busy. I have to wait for 4-5 rings before I finally hear the busy signal. What is going on here? |

That's a new one on me, but have you tried re-cycling power on the adapter? That solves a lot of problems. |

Yes, I have removed power from my PAP2 for about ten minutes, but it still does it. I tried calling Vonage's Customer support, but hung up after being on hold for over ten minutes. I will try again much later when hopefully they will not be so busy. |

>def a problem with your adapter
Just curious about why it is my adapter that is the problem. I can get a dial tone, and I can call anyone whose number isn't busy. The problem is that whether a number is busy or not, it seems there is a fake ring before the "real" ring or busy signal starts. For example, in S. Korea, people can choose an option to have calling parties hear music instead of an actual ring tone. When I call my friend in S. Korea, I hear a normal ring (fake ring). After about 4-5 rings, I will then hear the music that he has set up as his ring tone. It is as if I am hearing the fake ring while a connection to the number is being made and then I hear the actual ring or busy tone after the connection has been made. Since I can hear a dial tone, dial numbers, and receive phone calls, how could this be my adapter? |

The ringing sound that you hear when you make a call is always a "fake ring". You are not hearing the signal that is ringing the phone at the distant end. With ordinary phone lines (POTS), the ring tone (fake ring) is generated at your local phone sub-station and sent to your phone. With Voip, the ring tone is generated right there in your adapter. Aparently your adapter has some sort of problem that causes it to generate the ring tone before receiving a valid indication that the call is going through.
I would speculate that when you call your Korean friend, your adapter starts to generate the ring tone. The Korean sub-station then detects that the line to your friend's phone is clear and actually "answers" the call, sending music back to you while ringing your friend's phone. I'd be interested in whether you are charged for a completed call if your Korean friend doesn't answer. |

Thanks mod for the help with the title
So if my PAP2 is bad, is it possible to order another one and keep the same number? |

I think I have figured out the answer. I think my ISP has started blocking ports. Can someone give me a list ports that my PAP2 uses particularly the ones that are used to control the ring tone? |

Your adapter is not getting the busy signal fast enough. This is fairly common and usually prominent with International calls.
It all depends on the internet latency issue at the destination provider. It is common to hear at least two different type of rings prior to the actual connection for International calls. This is due to multiple peering that Vonage call have to terminate with. Usually it's because the overseas Voip provider gateway is waiting for the actual POTS connection. During that wait time, you will hear ringing sounds from your adapter.
